After many trips to the island we think touring falls into a few categories. There are the two main cities, Fira and Oia, which are connected via a local bus line, taxi (about 20€) or a very long hike (popular with hikers). Outside of these towns you really need to think about transportation such as renting a car for the day (pretty inexpensive). Once you leave those two towns you have several beaches scattered around the island (we think Red Beach is the most picturesque) and the ruins of Akritori. There are also a few wineries (the island specializes in white wines) scattered around the island that are generally open to visitors.

We had a day in Santorini while on a cruise, arriving about 1 PM and departing at 10 PM in 2014. What a beautiful and relaxing place! We rode up to the top of the area into the town of Fira and spent a couple hours exploring there, then took the public bus to Oia, where we spent the majority of our time. It was a magnificent place and so warm and inviting. We took our time and enjoyed the atmosphere and found it a place to savor the people and architecture. We liked it so well that we are going back in September for 3 nights and will stay in one of the 'cave houses' we found on AirBandB before we fly to Athens to begin another cruise of the Mediterranean. The bus is a low cost alternative and it seems to be reliable and pretty frequent. Have cash to pay when you get on if you use it. Some in our party went to the south end of the island by bus to Red Beach instead of Oia and it was a total bust, as they felt the undercurrent was very dangerous and it wasn't particularly nice. Glad we went to Oia! Enjoy your trip!
