When your partner doesn't love cruising as much as you do...

Oh no....I hope I haven't been forcing him :( For what it's worth, HE picked the 10-night Serenade we just booked last week. He wanted to do either that or a 9-night Navigator.

The last two cruises I casually mentioned to my bf and he asked how much, and then immediately "Book them!" Then come to find out there are many aspects of cruising he does not like. So I'm not really sure if he likes it or not. We even went on two in one year (the last two).

He may very much be going bc he loves you and knows you love cruising, so he puts up with it. But if it's in fact the motion that makes him miserable and not other aspects of cruising, other than the patches and meds, there's not much he can do to NOT be ill. He's not making a fuss or giving attitude bc he doesn't like the cruise (not saying he is making a fuss at all) but it's understandable for someone to be grumpy or not in the best mood bc they are seasick. For people who get motion sick, nothing works, and it's just unavoidable in many cases. I used to get motion sick on everything, and now nothing. I have no idea why.

My husband cruises to please me and as long as he doesn't look out at the ocean he is fine. So I only get to sail every few years and enjoy them while we are on them. Our next is a transatlantic to celebrate our retirements this fall - hopefully he will enjoy so we plan more in the future. Otherwise I will look to sail solo in the future while he is playing in a poker tournament (torture for me to spend time in loud, smoky casino). That marriage compromise.

I've been on about 25 cruises and DH has been on about 12 of them. We used to cruise 1 or 2 times a year but as I aged I wanted to cruise more. Now that we are both retired I would be happy to cruise as often as possible but he only wants to go once a year.

He is just a homebody. When we do cruise together he generally wants to spend his day in the spa reading, relaxing, go to meals and some shows. He doesn't even want to get off at the ports.

This has gotten more so as we have gotten older. I have started going with friends, relatives and I have taken solo cruises (which I enjoy). He would rather stay at home with the dog. I refuse to feel guilty.

I guess it comes down to if he is ok with you going with someone else or solo. It that is so then go. If not, you will need to work out some sort of compromise.

I have the opposite problem as far as motion sickness is concerned. I get motion sick watching a feather float to the ground (I'm kidding - I think, to be safe I'm not trying it..). I've been sick on helicopters, small planes, small ships, etc. Large planes and cruise ships have no affect on me. I've heard ginger works really well. There's ginger candy, and ginger ale while on the ship.

My husband isn't crazy about cruises, but mainly goes for me. In turn, I go away to football weekends with him (so he owes me, big time). My suggestions for you would be to try to get an itinerary with a not too many sea days. That way the ship won't be moving as much. Also, the best location for your cabin to be if he has motion sickness is mid-deck on the lower levels. Also inside cabins feel less motion. Good luck!!

Good idea about minimizing sea days. Weve been on Southern Caribbean itineraries with only one sea day. Med itineraries are typically port intensive too.
