Extra charge for premium aged steak in Chops?

It's Liberty of the Seas--7 day cruise. I'm trying to pick one of the formal nights as an evening to eat at Giovani's. I would prefer the later Formal evening as opposed to the first. We want to experience at least one formal evening and we felt the first might be the best.

The second formal night is usually the one that serves Lobster if that makes a difference to you.

Thanks for all the replies and information. We haven't sailed RCL since 2010, and we did eat in the steakhouse during that cruise and it was a fantastic meal. Then again this was before the double up-sell that they are now doing.

I've always been appreciative of extra charge restaurants, as long as the price is fairly reasonable and as long as the quality and service are extraordinary. However, after eating at both upcharge restaurants on our past Princess cruises and being disappointed, and after hearing about this extra upcharge for supposedly better steaks at Chops, I think my opinion has changed.

My feelings have always been that if cruise lines can keep the prices low for the cruise itself, but want to have some optional venues for extraordinary food and service, why not? That way those people who want to cruise cheap can, but those of us who want to pay a little extra for better food and service have that option. But seeing the prices that RCL and NCL are charging these days, the base price of the cruise is NOT low. They are charging high prices for their cruises AND doing this ridiculous upsell for extra charge venues. Well, hopefully the customers will speak with their money and RCL and other lines will dial it back a little. Then again, if people are willing to pay, then I guess I will need to find alternate vacations to spend my money on. If the demand is there, I guess I can't begrudge them making as much money as possible. It's just not worth it anymore though (to me).

I've gotten it before. The only reason I did it was because I had to burn up some obc on the last day and didn't want to waste what was basically free money still on the table. It was a nice steak but I don't think I would ever do it with out the Obc just not sure it was good enough to pay what amounted to about $60 at the time with the normal cover charge plus the up charge.

I have always had a good steak when going there and haven't had the issue some seem to have with the quality. Maybe always using obc for these restaurants makes me a little less critical? I do think the filets have always been better for me in Gio's and Portifinos.

It might have been better to draw that credit out in the casino in cash.

We did that for the cruise line provided OBC on the Anthem cruise we just returned from. We had set up our onboard account as a cash one so didn't have to pay the 5% fee they charge for doing this on a credit card account.

The casino will give you non-cashable chips for the tables, if you want to play them or a non-cashable voucher for the slots. Also if you are really lucky at the tables and don't lose the non-cashable chips you can take them back to the cashier and exchange them for a non-cashable slot voucher. I did that because I only played enough to use a couple of match bet coupons we got at our roll call slot pull. :D.

All one needs to do if they want to cash out their OBC with out play in the casino is ask for a slot non-cashable voucher, insert it into any slot machine and cash out immediately without any play and the slot will spit out a cashable voucher which you simply take to the cashier for redemption.

If you are shy about doing this so blazon, simply add a few dollar cash to the slot to change the amount and cash out without playing the slot as then you'll have a different amount on the cashable voucher. I did this and gave the cashable voucher to DW who cashed it in as it was I who got the non-cashable slot voucher in the first place.

I've gotten the porterhouse steak in the past in Chops when it was a no charge item so I don't know if it was the same quality as the current charge for steak. It was very good tasting but it was too large for myself. We ate in Chops on Anthem and the filet mignon that DW and I had were very good.
