Hiking in Ketchikan

For those that are interested about hiking trails

I stumbled upon this from US Parks Dept giving detail trail guides in Ketchikan

My husband and I will be in Ketchikan in early May on the Nieuw Amsterdam and want to hike Rainbird Trail. I am afraid of Bears what do you think about bringing bells and a whistle to blow to keep them away

My husband and I will be in Ketchikan in early May on the Nieuw Amsterdam and want to hike Rainbird Trail. I am afraid of Bears what do you think about bringing bells and a whistle to blow to keep them away

 

All the bells do is annoy other hikers. Avoid carrying food. And on the off chance you do see a bear back slowly away.

 

In Canada the joke is that bears listen for bells kind of like Good Humor trucks and pepper spray as seasoning...
