CruznRagtop Posted August 9, 2016 #1 Share Posted August 9, 2016 Can anyone reading this point me in the right direction when it comes to buying fig (fico) liqueur at any of the ports in Italy? I have tried in the past in Naples, Civitavecchia, and Messina, and I have been unsuccessful. Any suggestion would be appreciated!
Rare Host Bonjour Posted August 9, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 9, 2016 Can anyone reading this point me in the right direction when it comes to buying fig (fico) liqueur at any of the ports in Italy? I have tried in the past in Naples, Civitavecchia, and Messina, and I have been unsuccessful. Any suggestion would be appreciated! I had to google this because I have always lived in and around traditionally *very* Italian immigrant neighborhoods and hadn't ever heard of it! Everyone grew figs, baked with them, we ate them but never drank anything made from them. There was a lot of potent home made wine ;) and limoncello, aranciello...grappa, anisette, sambucca, etc. Also, I'd never seen it on the shelves in Italy, either in Verona, Florence, Modena, Rome or Palermo but I wasn't looking for it, So my google results came up with this, and interesting bit tracing back to Morocco: http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2014/07/07/329529687/couple-revives-lost-moroccan-fig-liquor-one-bottle-at-a-time and this, a connection to Provence - but there's no text: http://www.deccanchronicle.com/131129/lifestyle-food/article/fig-liqueur-easiest-make-home ...which would explain why you'd not found it in Italy - and I'd not heard of it in my Italian immigrant neighborhoods (again, people from every corner of Italy) since forever and the internet doesn't return a link connecting it to Italy. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist there somewhere - Milan maybe? But if you've looked that hard for it in port shops, it's probably not there. Might have better luck trying a specialist liquor shop to try and order it? Seems like it does exist, albeit via a different country! :) If you order it, enjoy it.
