ambelina Posted September 8, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 8, 2016 We are looking at a British Isles (12 day) cruise with Princess in the summer of 2017. There is one with a stop in Liverpool and the other has a stop in Kirkwall. We are not sure which to chose and would like advice from those that have been to either or both. Otherwise the itineraries appear to be the same. Also which month would be best: June, July or August? Thank You
GrJ Berkshire Posted September 8, 2016 #2 Share Posted September 8, 2016 It depends on your preferences. One is a small remote town with charm, few visit, the other a large city with all the pros and cons this brings. Liverpool has more obvious tourist 'sites' or the area around depending how long you are in port. Kirkwall has a unique charm , small cathedral and an insight into an island life, but would need transport to do outer areas or a tour. Also depends on other ports are they large cities or countryside stops? Are you looking to walk or take a tour?
LondonTowner Posted September 9, 2016 #3 Share Posted September 9, 2016 We went to Kirkwall on a cruise last year. My OH is interested in WWII history so we did a private tour. It was August and the weather was awful, cold, wet and windy. We have no desire to return to the Orkneys, but would definately go back to Liverpool as there is a lot to see and do. I think you need to take a tour in Kirkwell to get the best out if it, whereas Liverpool would be say to do on your own.
clarky213 Posted September 9, 2016 #4 Share Posted September 9, 2016 I'd say Liverpool.............but I'm biased:D
SGilly Posted September 9, 2016 #5 Share Posted September 9, 2016 Just got home from the Caribbean Princess British Isles cruise.... Liverpool was one of the best ports! We did a private Beatles Fab Four tour, it was fantastic! Liverpool was the only port that had a good wandering/shopping area right by the ship. turnip eater Posted September 10, 2016 #6 Share Posted September 10, 2016 (edited) We did a British Isles cruise in June/July. Weather in Kirkwall was awful. It's a tender port and the tenders were being thrown about by the rough weather! Liverpool were really pleased to see us. Lots if people turned out to greet us and there was a concert and firework display for our sail away:D From Liverpool you can visit North Wales or Cheshire, if you want countryside. Liverpool has art and museums if you want culture. It has a huge shopping area within walking distance of the dock. If fact you dock in the city, not some outpost miles away. There's more to Liverpool than the Beatles, although there's lots of Beatle info too! Edited September 10, 2016 by turnip eater
ambelina Posted September 10, 2016 Author #7 Share Posted September 10, 2016 Thank you all for your responses. We were leaning more toward Liverpool and it seems to be recommended the most. We missed the Orkneys 12 years ago on a cruise because of weather and wondered if we should try again but I think we will go for Liverpool.
