Rail strike in Italy 20/21May

May 20th ~ 21st 2004: 24 hours nationwide strike of Italian railroaders and maritime personnel belonging to FS (Ferrovie dello Stato - State Railroads), from 2100 (May. 20) till 2100 (May. 21) Any suggestions for a alternative cheep way to get to the port? We are joining the Galaxy on the 21 May Med cruise.

Hey! We are on that cruise as well and wondering the same thing. I have found a couple of limo companies that I have requested quotes from, but know nothing about the companies. Does anyone have a specific recommendation on a company you have used and liked?

Will you be arriving in Rome on the 21st? We are arriving on the 20th.

there are often inpromptu rail strikes in italy and it is wise to have a contingency plan in place.

We will be arriving on the 19th May and staying 2 nights at the Napoleon hotel.
The previous strike planned for the 13 and 14 May was cancelled, so I hope this one will be too. But even if this one is cancelled it leaves you wondering if we will be stranded in port when we get back and need to get to the airport.

We will be in Naples on May 20 and decided to visit Capri, Sorrento and Pompeii on our own. (as our friends did)

Do you have any idea if there is a bus or some other transportation from Sorrento or Naples to Pompeii?

According to this excellent source [url="http://www.seekitaly.com/news/from_roma.html#strikes"]http://www.seekitaly.com/news/from_roma.html#strikes[/url] the strike does not start until 9pm on May 20 so you should be okay for taking the commuter train service [url="http://www.vesuviana.it/infoeng.htm"]http://www.vesuviana.it/infoeng.htm[/url] (which may not be part of FS anyway) directly from Naples to Pompeii Scavi for visiting the ruins-"scavi" is Italian for "excavations" FYI.

The Circumvesuviana as Nidwalder mentions is a private railway system and not part of the Italian State Railway (FS) so should not be affected.
