RaeBay Posted November 23, 2016 #2 Share Posted November 23, 2016 Best to do it before or after cruise Sent from my iPhone using Forums
maryann ns Posted November 23, 2016 #3 Share Posted November 23, 2016 I agree, one day (two nights) is not long enough. It is easy to fly there on your own and find a driver (car or tuk tuk) to take you around. Then all you need is a guide book.

iancal Posted November 24, 2016 #5 Share Posted November 24, 2016 We did our own tour of Angkor Wot on our from from Northern Thailand to Viet Nam. It can be done very easily on your own. We flew in and arranged for a private guide for two days. Much more than a driver, he had lots of information as well as knowing when/where to take us when it would be less crowded. We paid $40. USD for the guide. He had an AC Lexus SUV. He took us out one night to a show. We used tripadvisor recommendations to find him. We were there in Feb. It was very hot. We started early and were back in the hotel pool by 3PM. We enjoyed the town very much..make sure you stay close to the center of town. Lots of great places to eat. Hotel was easy to arrange and very inexpensive. We paid for our visa that the airport when we arrived. It was very straightforward. I would say that if you are the least bit independent you do not need an excursion. DIY with a good, local guide will do the trick.

Could you provide the name and contact information for the guide you used in Angkor Wat? My email is gdcolville at Comcast dot net. GrandmaHofmann Posted January 2, 2017 #8 Share Posted January 2, 2017 Why wouldn't you go on your own? Easy to do and much cheaper. Try Khuber Tours. We had them for $100 a day with an air conditioned car. Great guys
iancal Posted January 2, 2017 #9 Share Posted January 2, 2017 (edited) We used Happy Anghor Wat Tours. Found them on tripadvisor. Our guides name was Dee. We toured in an Lexus SUV. He knew where and when to take us to the various areas in order to avoid the bus tours. He also arranged for an evening out. I think we paid $40 or 50 USD day. Don't do the tuk tuk tours to the site. Hot, dry, dusty. Go with a pro. Dee explained the history etc. Very knowledgeable and personable guy. He provided lots of bottled water. We started early and finished by 2:30/3 each day. It was hot. Pool and cold beer as soon as we returned to the hotel. We stayed at the Central Indochine D'anghor Hotel. Room facing the pool. It was perfect. Just looked it up. We paid $120. for four nights in Feb. 16. Incuded a buffet breakfast or your could have one made to order. We liked this small hotel. Very friendly people, convenient location. We flew into Siem Reap from Bangkok. Got our Cambodia visa at the airport-very easy. We went on to Vietnam by land and needed a 30 day single entry visa. 50Oceans Travel Agency in Siem Reap arranged this for us. They were excellent to deal with. maryann ns Posted January 4, 2017 #10 Share Posted January 4, 2017 I think the tuk tuks add to the experience. We had a wonderful driver (Savuth) for four days. He always had good advice and lots of cold water. When you are moving you get a breeze. You can find Savuth here: https://angkortuktuk.wordpress.com/tag/siem-reap/page/2/ We stayed at the Rose Apple, a wonderful boutique hotel with owners who speak English. They have a lovely pool, great breakfasts and are walking distance to central places in Siem Reap.
