service charge

Recommended Posts

Sure it has been asked many times before but is there a service charge for drinks on Thomson? We bought the drinks package on the Celebration on our first cruise in October but probably used only half the cost if that. This time on the Discovery later this month we will buy as we want and probably use the bars and wifi on the islands we visit as the excursions do not appeal at the prices asked. Also is there any problem bringing alcohol onto the ship?

Thanks Pensioncruiser, beginning to think Thomson cruises have quite a lot to commend them despite their desperate customer service department, does it really exist???. Thomson do seem to keep it simple compared with other companies and I suspect many of us appreciate that.

My Wife made a valid point after we have only cruised with P&O upto now, that the reason Thomson hardly have any sea days is that the passengers won't then be drinking the ship dry on these days and keeping the bar overheads lower, whereas P&O want you to spend spend spend on the many sea days to ramp up your bill. From some of the comments I have read I think we will like Discovery 1 as we are not so keen on the bigger ships, especially the ones that look like flats, you tend to call them 'A floating Tower Hamlets'

But it also costs for a berth in port - and for pilot, tugs etc

Also a lot of Thomson cruisers have done the itineries before and don't always get off I should think it's more expensive to berth compared to the amount cruisers would drink on A1 at the duty free/wholesale alcohol prices Thomson buy their booze at

Agree with that, port intensive cruises is one of their selling points, also Thomsons always make an effort to get an alternative port if weather/other disruptions prevent them making it in to a scheduled port instead of taking the easy option of bobbing around at sea for an extra day.

In around 60 cruises with them i have never finished up with an extra unscheduled sea day.

Exactly last year when in Venice there was bad weather for our journey to the next port of call (which I can't remember sorry) and bad weather expected the following day so we stayed in Venice overnight and didn't leave til 4 the next day - it can't have been cheap

I've only ever had one extra sea day and that was Dreams first Caribbean season when leaving Cuba water got into the engine and we floated about for four hours whilst the problem was sorted and missed going into the Dominican Republic so went straight to Road Town where we berthed much to the annoyance of cruisers on Destiny who were due there the same day, as we got the berth and they ended up on tender instead of us.

We felt so sorry for the story telling German captain who had only just got on in Cuba who was completely flummoxed by the problem at first but it turned out to be the Cuban fuel!!
