cell phone tower on GRAND?

Hi JJ.

Regular land-based cell phones do not work on cruise ships. If you have a satellite phone perhaps someone else on these boards could answer that question. The only port that I have been in and been able to make calls from is St. Thomas and that was with SPRINT.

I have only recently had my first cruise, but truly loved it. I think a cell tower aboard ship would be a real downer. (not to mention just plain ugly!!!) Do we really need cell phones on the ship, or walkie talkies? If you MUST reach home, there is always the internet cafe, to send an email.

I completely agree. I think that is the best thing about cruising! No one talking loudly on their cell phone by the pool, at dinner, in the casino, in the elevator, etc. A true vacation!!!

There are ships with Cell phone antennas out there now, luckily none on Princess. They transmit your calls to satellite, then to the land, and cost $1.49/minute (or something like that).

I think RCI has them on 2 ships, although I could be wrong.

There was an article a month or so ago about this in Cruise News Daily (www.cruisenewsdaily.com). There is a company which is contracting with cruise lines (don’t know which ones, but you can be it will be all of them) which will install cell towers on ships which will allow cell phone use on board. Supposedly the plus is that cruise lines can determine which areas of the ship will receive cell reception. So while there isn’t a lot of cell phone use yet, it’s on the way.

Anyone else have the feeling that some people are addicted to their cell phones? When you're on vacation, it's nice to get away from it all and be waited on 24/7. Cell phones just don't fit into that mix for me. If your family has an emergency, they can email you on the ship directly.

I've found cell phone coverage way out in parts of Glacier Bay, Alaska on previous Princess Cruises. When I sailed the last two weeks on the Sea Princess from Quebec City to Ft. Lauderdale we had cell phone coverage nearly every day. Of course we could see Canadian and American soil off the side of the ship. :D If you do take your cell phone make sure you have foreign country roaming before you leave and check that your cell phone matches the type of phone used in that country.
