beachsands Posted February 14, 2017 #1 Share Posted February 14, 2017 Hi Everyone ! We are taking our first cruise on the Carnival Magic in April. One of the ladies that is coming with us got married since she had gotten her passport. So the name on it differs from the one on her drivers license and cruise documents. Is this going to cause any problems getting on the ship and/or going through customs? ~~Joel~~
CocaCola19 Posted February 14, 2017 #2 Share Posted February 14, 2017 She won't need to show her DL, but if her passport has a different name from the cruise document just bring the marriage certificate too.
Rare sparks1093 Posted February 14, 2017 #3 Share Posted February 14, 2017 I would think she'd be fine if she brings her marriage certificate.
Rare sparks1093 Posted February 14, 2017 #4 Share Posted February 14, 2017 No problem. If she has a passport she does not need to show a DL. Sounds like the passport is in her maiden name and the cruise was booked in her married name.

How long does it take to get a marriage certificate, particularly if it is already in your possession? Getting the passport amended is certainly an option but since it would cost money to do so it might be more expedient to just bring the marriage certificate. Rare Rogueperson Posted February 14, 2017 #10 Share Posted February 14, 2017 If the cruise isn't until April, you can also call your TA/cruise line and amend the booking to reflect the same name as on the passport (maiden name) which would alleviate the need to bridge the difference between booking and passport. But if there isn't enough time (which I'm fairly certain there is, if the cruise is in April), you just connect your booking to your passport with the marriage license. Every state is different, but you should be able to get a copy of it at the Courthouse your registered your license at.

Dont you know that the only legit advice around here is the advice Havingfun gives?:cool::rolleyes::D I agree. The marriage license is certainly the easiest thing to do here. If she got the passport just before she got married she can get a free name change (within 1 year).

This is very true but if not then it will cost her the price of a passport.

So,, Havingfun2010 , are you saying to get the docs corrected before she hits the port ? given that they are not sailing til april ,, sounds like a good idea When you get married, you need to change your name on DL, Social Security, and it seems like a hundred different things, because your old name is no longer your legal name. Although it cost money, so does getting married. The process is easy, send it in, and get it fixed. Most people say it only takes 2-3 weeks for renewals and changes. This solves the issue. Secondly, and the strange chance that it takes longer than 2 months to get back, she can use her birth certificate, and DL as ID. The marriage license would be a bridging document to prove the change from BC to DL. So fix the issue, and have the back-up plan, which most likely won't be needed. BALCONETTE Posted February 14, 2017 #15 Share Posted February 14, 2017 We also had this problem. My sister's passport is still in her maiden name. I called Carnival and was told to book the cruise in her maiden name to match her passport but make sure she brings her marriage certificate just in case. Not sure if you're able to make a name change on your booking now. I'd call Carnival just for peace of mind.
beachsands Posted February 14, 2017 Author #16 Share Posted February 14, 2017 This is very true but if not then it will cost her the price of a passport. Yes she only has a couple of years left on the passport, so I suspect she will opt for bringing their marriage license. Thanks for all the great posts. Expeditiously as well ! ~~Joel~~

This is only a requirement if you are in fact changing your name. If you are retaining your maiden name (as many do nowadays) then there is no requirement (of course if OP's friend fit this category we wouldn't be discussing the matter in this thread). cmukid87 Posted February 14, 2017 #18 Share Posted February 14, 2017 My wife strictly uses her passport while cruising. I don't feel it is necessary to pay for a new passport until it is expired. I book everything under her maiden name with no problems ever.
