My first cruise was in 1940 when my mother and I sailed to Honolulu, to join my father, on the SS Lurline, flagship of the Matson Line.

I was five at the time but still remember how beautiful it was. Then you had to dress formal for dinner!

My first cruise was on the Bermuda Star in 1984. Over the years, she changed hands a few times and became the Enchanted Isle of Commodore Cruise Line.

I sailed again on her in 1999. Alas, she went to the breakers in India.

My husband worked for Bermuda Star Line back in about 1985, I think. He was the leader of one of the bands on the Star and the Veracruz.

Our first cruise was on Song of Norway in 1982.

There was no casino, no television, and no buffet.

A lot of summer camp-ish activities that were fun.

Diving for spoons, horse race, bingo for trinkets.

Bed for two was smaller than a double bed.

And it was expensive.

But it was fun.

Oh. I got sick and by the time we got home DH was sick too.

There was no food in the house and we laid in bed too sick to go to the store and the whole room seemed to rock and rock and rock.

That was not so fun.
