What to take on shore excursion

Your cruise card will do fine unless you are told otherwise. If you are doing a water excursion, buy a dry box at a local dive shop to keep your cruise card, money, credit card, etc. in while you are in the water. We also take our disposable underwater camera with us on watersport excursions.

I have occasionally been asked for a photo id as well, usually just the cruise card, but I'd take the photo id with me just in case.

Just take your cruise card to get back on the ship. Also, take just one credit card if you have more than one and some cash. Be sure to have enough cash to tip your excursion guide. Also, if your excursion involves driving, such as a Jeep excursion, be sure to bring your driver's license. When I'm on a shore excursion, I leave as much as I can in my cabin safe.

I usually take the cruise card (can't get off the ship without it), driver's license, cash, and a credit card. My swim suit has a pocket with Velcro. I don't bother with a dry box because I've found that people will accept wet money just as well as dry.

I suggest you take a credit card, at least a copy of your passport, your travel insurance emergency contact card, the phone number of the cruise line's local agent (listed in the daily newspaper)and some cash.

Why? If you get involved in an accident or miss the ship, how are you going to pay for things? How are you going to book alternate transportation? You won't even be able to make a phone call. How are you going to prove who you are? How are you going to pay for a hotel room and clothes? I don't know why people are afraid of losing their passport, it's replaceable, you don't leave your driver's license at home do you?

I email a scan of our passports to our Yahoo mail account inbox so I can download and print out a color copy anywhere in the world if need be.

Remember, you are in a foreign country. Just my opinion.

Cruzincurt:

Great advice! Most folks can't even imagine what it is like to be on an excursion, and then get delayed. It can be a real migrane headache.

Imagine the sinking feeling, as these unfortunates tardily approach the port; only to see "their" ship sailing merrily, off into the sunset!

We have evidently planned well and have been lucky; but we have known several others who got into that situation.

Its almost always up to you to catch up with the ship, which in some cases, might be a piece of cake; but more often than not, can be a real (expensive)pain in the a**.

Keep on Cruisin',

So true. Three years ago, my sister took a tour on the Amalfi drive that got caught in traffic. They were stuck with no way to go forward or back and you sure don't get off the Amalfi drive any other way (and live to tell about it.) It was a Princess tour and they got back to the ship almost two hours after the ship was scheduled to sail. The ship waited for them and sailed about 10 minutes after they got back -- only long enough to bring in the gangplank. If anyone had been on an independent tour, they would have missed the boat.

Scanning your passport onto the internet... sounds very cool, then I wondered about a hacked account and identity theft. Any real concerns there, or am I worrying needlessly??

We bring color photocopies of our passports and credit cards along. We leave the copies in the safe in our room and carry the originals of both documents with us (unless we're headed to the beach- then it's the duplicates of the passports).

Nice to have are a tiny bottle of waterless hand cleaner, the next dose(s) of medications and some Tylenol, a band-aid or two and a pack of kleenex. A small amount of sunscreen can really save a lot of misery later!

Many years ago, a cruise director suggested taking one of the postcards (with a picture of the ship, found among the cabin stationery) along with you whenever you leave the ship. This is especially true in a foreign country where you may not speak the language. If you get lost, you may have difficulty expressing to a taxi driver that you want to go to the port; if you show him/her a picture of the ship, NO PROBLEM! But, I agree with the writer that suggested taking along a copy of the PATTER and/or the port guide; both contain the name, address and telephone number of the ship's agent in port.
