Currency in Caribbean please?

What currency should I take to use in the Caribbean? I am visiting St Kitts, St Lucia, St Maarten & Barbados. Also are Euros appropriate for Ponta Del Gardo? Thanks.

US dollars are used everywhere, although if you use them in shops you may get change in the local currency.

This is true and the local change will be below proper equivalent value. So take lots of U.S $1, $5 and $10 so you can give the exact appropriate amount and not need change.

We used euro in St Maarten and got a much better rate than US$.

Sometimes you will be given change in local currency which is why it is useful to have small denomination notes when using US$. If you end up with some local currency, you can use that up on small purchases e.g. soft drinks for cabin. You can also pay in mixed currency in a bar e.g. US$ 2 plus EC$ 2 for a US$ 3 beer.

 

Ponta Delgada is EUR.

Have to say I have had local currency only twice in 4 cruises the $ seems to be the main currency. The Barbadian dollar notes are very pretty. :)

The US dollar has been accepted at every place in the Caribbean that I have been to - and usually the change has been given in US$ as well.

Just returned from a Southern Caribbean cruise including the islands you mention, and US dollar was accepted everywhere, with any change being given in local currency.

 

Took plenty of low denomination US notes so only a few coins usually in change, and the odd note, which made an interesting addition to the 'holiday coin collection'

US dollars accepted everywhere. There are about 3 carribean dollars to the US dollar so if you see a price ask is it Caribbean dollar price as you might end up paying 3 times the price if you assume it is US dollar price
