Andykim Posted March 27, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 27, 2017 Was wondering when you get off the ship at Costa Maya, are there a lot of local taxi / tour companies? If so, what was your experience with them and where did you go? How much did you spend? Thanks in advance for your help.
Rare crewsweeper Posted March 28, 2017 #2 Share Posted March 28, 2017 When you get off the ship and walk down the long pier and through the shopping complex to the parking lot, you will find ship excursion buses and vans, as well as a tram to the malecon (boardwalk) in nearby Mahahual. For a taxi you'll need to go out of the cruise port and walk about 2 blocks. For any private excursions, you'll need to have advanced reservations and most likely either walk to their meeting spot (as with Native Choice) or take a taxi to where they meet up. Things are fairly well controlled in the port complex and just outside as it is in the interest of the local developers to recoup their investment. Nuevo Mahahual, the are right outside the cruise port is not a bustling town with lots to do. Neither is the area a bustling area with lots to do. Beaches and Mayan ruins well inland are the chief attractions here. Mahahual itself was once a small strip of land inhabited by fishermen and some diving outfitters. So either plan in advance to take an excursion or just grab the tram or a taxi to the malecon. See the beach club sticky for information on various beach clubs along the malecon. Playaformia Posted April 3, 2017 #3 Share Posted April 3, 2017 Are there wheelchair accessible taxis here? We've been here before but stayed in the port area, would like to explore on our November cruise :D
Rare crewsweeper Posted April 3, 2017 #4 Share Posted April 3, 2017 I have seen people in regular wheelchairs and sports wheel chairs rolling along the malecon, so for those, I'd say there has to be, maybe a van taxi. But I wouldn't know if motorized wheel chairs can be loaded into any taxis there. While you may not be able to hit the beach along the malecon, it is reasonably flat outside the cruise port and they are continually adding shops and things. Along the main road from the Farmacia and Tequila store circle to near the intersection with the highway there's a median strip with a pathway, benches and shade.
