SSSLargo Posted April 26, 2017 #1 Share Posted April 26, 2017 Hello There will be 10 of us total and 3 would like to SCUBA in Cozumel. I was thinking if we all went to a Beach Club that offered SCUBA we could dive and the rest of the group could enjoy themselves on shore. Has anyone done this? Good bad ugly?Thank you
smokinmike Posted April 27, 2017 #2 Share Posted April 27, 2017 I guess the first question would be - is anyone a certified diver? Sent from my iPhone using Forums
ABQrobin Posted April 27, 2017 #3 Share Posted April 27, 2017 Here is the problem with this idea... Cozumel's reefs are spectacular, but they are more than a mile off shore. You must use a boat to get to them. And Cozumel is drift diving...which means there is enough current that getting back to the boat is too strenuous, so the boat follows you as you drift and picks you up at the end of the dive where ever you end up. It is spectacular diving, but it is BOAT diving, and you are required to have a DM per 8 people by law. This is for safety. Shore diving in Cozumel is done at some places, but it is nothing more than coral rubble, old tires or sculptures put down in water to attract the fish. It is not like Cozumel reefs. There are some beach clubs that have boats that go out to a nearby reef. Your best bet is to do that, but with your group size, you should probably contact them ahead of time. I am sure someone here or on the Cozumel forum can give you the names of the beach clubs that will do this. Make sure all of you have your C-cards and also let them know if you need rental gear. They need to know how many and sizes as many of these dive ops are small and may only have a few BCs and regs. robin
