We are considering a Baltic cruise in either August or September 2017. Any recommendations.

Pretty much like any time of the year. September can be fantastic or it could be horrible.

There is no guarantees that August will be nice either,

I am originally from USSR, although more to the south. Septembers usually colder than Augusts.

Unfortunately Bergen isn't in the Baltic, but the general principle is correct - August weather is usually warmer and the days are longer.

While you can't always predict the weather, it's a fact that the sun sets earlier in September so there are fewer hours of daylight.

However so often September is a settled month especially the first half. The days may be shorter but everywhere for tourism is less crowded, seas may be unpredictable but they are at any time of the year.

I like the link to Seattle, which I always thought was more European in its climate. We visited in July 2009 when all records were broken and it was 100°F.!!

Even though its not certain would go for first half of September.

Sorry for the bad post. I'd misread and thought the cruiser was looking at Norway. I concur that Baltic weather patterns are similar. Here's the weather chart for Helsinki:

I am not sure if it will impact cruise ship traffic but Russia will be conducting Zakhad/Zapad 2017 during that time.
