They are very aggrivating abbreviations for people WAY to lazy to type in daughter, son, husband or wife.....

I refuse to use em, because in my 35 years of life I have never called any of my friends, family or kids dear ...

There are other abbreviations or phrases I've seen exclusively about cruising that took me awhile to figure out. Maybe there could be a permanent sticky thread for new people? I'm thinking of:

PAX -- passengers

AFT -- back of the boat (not an abbrv, but could be confusing)

C & A -- Crown & Anchor

Docs -- documents

CD -- cruise director (not the musical disc)

TA -- travel agent

MED cruise -- mediterranian (don't laugh, I 1st thought it meant a special medical needs cruise :o )

PC -- i still don't know what this means!

When I first started reading the boards I thought the "D" in dh, dw, etc. stood for DRUNK (guess you can tell where my mind was).

I still like to think that is what it stands for, it sometimes makes the post that much better to read.

That's kind of sad. These are not replacements for NAMES, just how they think of those people. My wife and children are all very dear to me. Granted, I don't say "Dear Sally" (or whatever) face-to-face, but I have no problem refering to her as my dear (or darling) wife.

I have nothing to say about whether or not using abbreviations is aggravating. That's an opinion and those will vary from person to person.

 I have worked out most of the abbreviations used but I still cannot figure out what BTW stands for, probably simple and I will kick myself when I get told. I thought maybe back to writer but that does not always fit.

I completely agree. Someone comes here for information and need to spend time trying to figure out what the heck is being said. It is the same with message boards everywhere. It really isn't all that hard to type "in my opinion" or "wife". By the way, "BTW" means just that I think.

...oh, and you think site is annoying with abbreviations, you should go to some of the Disney World sites...nearly impossible sometimes.

.....

someone who uses internet abbreviations is no lazier than someone who posts messages with misspelled words because he is too lazy to spell them correctly.

JMO, YMMV.

The only time abbreviations annoy me here are when they are used for a ship name.

ROS - Radiance or Rhapsody???

VOS - Voyager or Vision???

MOS - Mariner, Majesty or Monarch???

EOS - Explorer, Enchantment or Empress???

Sometimes I can figure it out by the topic or itinerary being discussed. Other times I'm like HUH??? :p ;)

Can't remember calling any of them "dear" but I have always called my one son, out of seven children, "sweet son." BTW, he's 20 now and I still call him that.
