WashyWashyHappyHappy95 Posted October 6, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 6, 2017 Lots of beeping and noise when the ship is docked. On the BA sailings I've been on it was always port (ship turns around when departing), but this most recent sailing looked like the opposite. Anyone know for sure? EMBFlyer Posted October 6, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 6, 2017 It truly depends on the day, the Harbor Master and the Pilot as to whether they want the ship docked to port or to starboard. There are many factors that could change it on any given day. For example, if they need to do maintenance on port lifeboats, they'll dock to starboard so they can lower them. Also, say the weather is forecast to change during the day. It could be nice and calm in the morning and then the winds and currents pick up around sailing time. If I were the Captain, I'd much rather perform a complex maneuver with multiple turns, etc in good conditions and fairly simple one with the least amount of turns in poor conditions. SeaShark Posted October 6, 2017 #3 Share Posted October 6, 2017 It depends on which specific pier they are assigned, and also to whether they back into the berth or pull into the berth. It can vary sailing to sailing. Luckily, they've designed the ships, and the ports, such that it does not matter which side...there are exit/entry points on both port and starboard to allow for total flexibility. Nothing to worry about here.
Rare shof515 Posted October 6, 2017 #4 Share Posted October 6, 2017 On her most recent port stop on Tuesday, the ship docked on the starboard side
HuliHuli Posted October 6, 2017 #5 Share Posted October 6, 2017 Fantastic! Many times there is disagreement on these forums, but this time we've reached consensus - BA will dock on either the port or starboard side. I love it when a plan comes together. Docking forward or aft is far less popular.
