itsrocky94 Posted October 24, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 24, 2017 Im taking my Grandmother who is 92 to Freeport in February. She has been here about 4 times and always talked about going back and this was the only way I could afford it. She will be in a wheelchair, but is there anything cool to see or do like flea markets within walking distance of the cruise port or a short taxi ride away? Thanks! Any recommendations are welcome since it's my first time here and she hasn't been here in 30 years! (She did mention about wanting to see the old hotel she used to stay at? She said it was a Holiday Inn, across from a casino and had a small beach in Freeport. Sorry its so vague, but if anyone knows what she is talking about, let me know! :) )
zubee23 Posted October 31, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 31, 2017 The Holiday Inn is now where the Grand Lucayan and Memories are located. The casino was closed when I was there last January. Can she get in and out of a van? They should be able to put her wheelchair in the van. You could then take her to Port Lucaya where the Holiday Inn was. She'll probably remember Count Basie Square in Port Lucaya. It's $10 p/p round trip. Sent from my iPad using Forums
rkacruiser Posted October 31, 2017 #3 Share Posted October 31, 2017 Freeport's port area has numerous small stores and kiosks, a band stand with music some of the time, and many food vendor stalls. One gets off the ship and it is all there. Wheelchair friendly, I will add.
Snit13 Posted October 31, 2017 #4 Share Posted October 31, 2017 Approximately how far (blocks) is this area from the exit of the ship? Have mobility issues but do not use wheelchair.
rkacruiser Posted October 31, 2017 #5 Share Posted October 31, 2017 Approximately how far (blocks) is this area from the exit of the ship? Have mobility issues but do not use wheelchair. My experience at Freeport on Carnival Liberty: Cannot estimate "blocks", but once on the pier, the longest walk to/from the area about which I posted to the security gate that leads to that venue is the farthest distance to walk. There is no seating en route to the gate for a brief rest. Once through the security gate, I recall some scattered seating for those who need such. I'd suggest that prior to disembarking the ship once it's docked at Freeport that you take a good look at the area from the shore side of the ship. That may help you to decide if you wish to disembark or not.
