Rare jean87510 Posted November 11, 2017 #1 Share Posted November 11, 2017 We are a very active 50 yr old couple who love snorkeling and exploring. We both run 1/2 marathons so our fitness level is pretty good. We aren't interested in boat or catamaran tours nor do we like lying on the beach all day in one spot. Can anyone who has rented a car and drove around island recommend any points of interest? Sent from my SM-G955U using Forums mobile app
Rare MrSchwump Posted November 13, 2017 #2 Share Posted November 13, 2017 We picked up a car right at the cruise terminal and did a full lap of the island. We went north toward Speightstown, past the fancy resorts. There's an old church along with way that dates from the 17th or 18th century. We took a right at Speightstown and at one point came to the top of a ridge that has an amazing view of the east coast. There's a wide area where you can pull off for looking at the view and for photo ops. Vendors also set up shop here so be prepared to be offered all sorts of souvenirs. As you continue down toward the east coast, you'll pass a windmill. It was working at one time but a couple years ago when we were there it didn't seem to be. You can turn south and pull off at any number or spots along the road to get to the beach. The water is rough so not great for swimming but it's spectacular. You can drive on down toward Bathsheba which is a seaside settlement. There are some cool looking rock formations along the shore and the water is a little calmer here. You can drive south toward the southern tip of Barbados, past Crane Bay or you can cut overland toward Gun Hill Signal Station which is a colonial fortification that has great views of the entire south side of the island. There's a charge for entry but it's a great view and well worth it. The roads around Barbados are very good by island standards and I thought they were well marked and navigation was easy. Once you get into Bridgetown, the easy navigation goes away. I found it very confusing and only made our way back to the ship because it was the tallest thing around and we just kept driving toward it until we finally got there. Get a good map and have some patience and you'll be fine. It's fun to drive on the wrong side of the road, from a US perspective, and it's a beautiful island. littleTLondon Posted December 4, 2017 #4 Share Posted December 4, 2017 Hi If on your travels you see a sign for Huntes Garden do stop off. It is the most wonderful garden in a sink-like-hole gully created by a gentleman called Anthony Hunte. Magical.
