Dauntless Posted February 21, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 21, 2018 Though we were scheduled to tender on the Homelands cruise, when we arrived in port, we were the only ship there and docked On my next cruise in April we are scheduled to tender in Monte Carlo. Wanted to do a ship excursion but it sold out before we could sign up so I now have another item to figure out for this cruise. We arrive at 7:30 and leave at 10:00 pm so we have a lot of time in port. Though I have seen on Youtube that a Viking ship was docked in port one time I'm going to assume it will be as promoted and we will tender. I'm not finding what we are looking for out of Monte Carlo but I did find it out of Nice so I'm thinking about going there by train to pick up the excursion by 9:00. Now the logistics. I need advice about the tenders. My understanding is, you are not detained until the ship's excursion passengers have departed. About how long this process might take to get to port. When I get to port, time will dictate if we should take a cab to Nice, MC train station or bus to station. The trip to Nice is around 30 minutes so there is about an hour of 'wiggle" room. We are the only ship on port that day, as of now, so that may be to our advantage, but I am now trying to figure out solutions for the 'problem'. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Rare Peregrina651 Posted February 21, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 21, 2018 With any luck, you will dock in MC and not have to worry about tendering. We walked from the docks to the 100 bus stop on Place des Armes to take the bus to and from Nice. The drive along the coast has magnificent views. Think about it for the return instead of the train if it will still be daylight. I posted a map in another thread for how to walk to Place des Armes. See this post in Live from the Western Med. Thanks. I had seen that map when you posted but couldn't remember where and now I have a link. Had they told you that you would tender and things just worked out? I now see that I had misunderstood the time we departed. I suddenly have 4 extra hours in port so I might be able to do it on my own and work with the included tour in MC and public trans. elsewhere. I did find one from MC that covered that and Eze and then we could do Nice from there. Yesterday, I saw a window but today I'm beginning to see that it can be opened and I can get to the other side. Nice to have some personal interaction with you.

Dauntless Posted February 22, 2018 Author #5 Share Posted February 22, 2018 Good luck. Hope it all works out to your advantage. I may not need good luck as I have good news. As you can see above, someone else was docked and able to walk right off. At any rate, I found a 4 hr excursion, off that ship, that covers Eze and then comes back into MC in time to see the changing of the guard. That was disappointing on the last cruise, in another country . Youtube doesn't show much in one post and a lot in another, so I guess it's a crap shoot! Since it is a shore excursion, they will pick us up and delivery us to the ship. As if that isn't enough good news, I just rechecked port time to find we have 4 more hours in port than I thought so that's cushion. Rome2rio shows that the train hugs the coast line and that will be nice for our short trips in each direction. Rick Steve's has an audio guide and we have time. I think we're set,

Nice to have some personal interaction with you. MC was marked as a tender port on our itinerary, so I guess we did luck out. We departed at 6 pm so my gut says that you should double check that 10 pm departure time - don't know why my gut is talking but it is. I looked at Google maps. The 100 bus runs along the M6098. If we ever get back to MC/Nice, I'd like to stop at one of the little towns along the way and find a restaurant close to the water with a fine view and enjoy a leisurely lunch. My gut said "Really MVJ?" I called and they verified it was 10:00. But we all know, that means as of right now and 'they have been wrong before. I'll check with the March sailing and see what happens there but stay flexible. They have sailed out later when there was a fireworks competition in MC and just last week, the Toulon port was changed
Dauntless Posted February 22, 2018 Author #9 Share Posted February 22, 2018 Just checked original invoice and the departure time for MC has always been 10:00 pm. Just my oversight.
Mrs Miggins Posted February 22, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 22, 2018 I have both docked and tendered in Monte Carlo with Viking. If you do have to tender then the process is quick and easy into Port de Fontviellle. I see you have a tour to Eze so presumably they will pick you up at either location. However it depends what time the tender process actually starts of course. Changing of the Guard is fun but not quite as slick as in front of Buckingham Palace. We saw it in winter when they have rather smart uniforms and in summer when the whites could have done with a little ironing ! Recommend the 100 bus to Nice. Villefranche is a nice stop off for lunch. Last June it was lovely to walk around the fort - I think there were only about 6 other people there. If you plan to visit the Casino area then we have done that both during the day and also in the evening. As you have a late departure then seeing it at night is lovely. Many people do not like Monaco but it is certainly very interesting.

Rare Peregrina651 Posted March 23, 2018 #13 Share Posted March 23, 2018 Sorry this does not answer your question but how do you know when you are tendering in a port? Thanks Look on your invoice, scroll down past the first page to where it shows the itinerary for the cruise with the times you will be in port. If the port is marked with an anchor, it means that Viking is scheduled to anchor at that port and thus tender to the docks (it may also be shown on MyVikingJourney, where it shows a summary of your itinerary). However, regardless of prior information, you will not know for sure until you actually arrive in the port.

When we arrived, we tendered ashore, but when another ship left port sometime before dinner, the captain was able to move the Star to the dock. After dinner, we were able to walk off the ship into town for an after dinner stroll.
Northumbrialass Posted March 24, 2018 #15 Share Posted March 24, 2018 We have just returned home from our Mediterranean Odyssey cruise, it was a great holiday despite the weather, it rained when we were in Monaco. We docked right in Monte Carol, no tenders were used. We took the included tour which was very good despite the awful weather.
