The connection was bad. I spoke to the gentleman in the internet room and he installed a 'magic button' on my ipad that he assured me would log me off immediately each time. In appearance the page looks no different from what I was doing myself, but I had no trouble once I used his method. Perhaps it was just coincidence or perhaps it really did do things a different way. Anyway, if you have trouble, then go for help sooner rather than later.
