Kayaking In Ketchikan - Orcas Cove or Pennock?

I know I have seen posts about this but after scrolling back through the last 10 pages I couldn't find anything.

 

Anyone done both trips? It looks like Orcas Cove has at lot more to offer in wildlife sightings and scenery. Also the Pennock Paddling trip starts off downtown which doesn't sound too appealing. Overall, the time spent in the kayak isn't much different when you account for the transit time to Orcas Cove.

 

Would love to hear from all of you Alaska experts since this is my first Alaska cruise :D

I have done both and greatly enjoyed each. :) Don't expect wildlife on either, except plenty of salmon on the Pennock paddling up Creek St if you go in August.

 

 

The Orca's Cove trip is definately more remote and pristine.

We will be in Ketchikan on 5/31 so I am leaning towards the Orcas Cove trip!

H2O Babe, that is great! What time did you reserve? I'm hoping 8 am isn't too early since that is the only time left that fits out port time schedule.....

We're wondering the same thing. Are you booking through Southeast Kayaks? We are only in port from 8-3 and want to see Totem Bight and maybe Saxman village as well as the museums and shops in time so while the Orca's Cove sounds more appealing we may have to go with the shorter excursion.

 

I hope someone else who has done either of these can tell us more about them. If anyone has any pictures of what we might see on either excursion that would help too.

Our family did the Orca Cove trip and really enjoyed it. It gave us a chance to get away from the crowds. It all depends what you are looking for.

I live here in Ketchikan. You will enjoy Orca cove much more and have a good chance at seeing some wildlife out there.
