Bag policy for attractions

I can't speak for St. Mark's, but this is the current situation in Rome: Small personal bags are okay in almost any venue (e.g., a purse or small camera bag, potentially a small daypack). For the Colosseum and Vatican they have become stricter and backpacks and even large daypacks may not be allowed -- you would have to check them. Also for those two sites, bags are searched. For the Pantheon I did not note any particular security, e.g., searching of bags or people being told that bags were too large -- however, I wouldn't push the limits.

I was able to take my large purse into all of those sites. St. Mark’s was strictest as you had to check-in backpacks in a locker. Also, make sure you have something to cover shoulders and knees if necessary.
