chuleta Posted April 2, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 2, 2004 Seems every cruise I have been on they have a sign that says the ship is full and no upgrades available. If there are rooms what do they charge to upgrade when boarding? Mary Lynn Proud Member of O.A.T.C. kristikae Posted April 2, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 2, 2004 I am convinced they put that sign out on every cruise. It's been there on every cruise I've been on. On the Glory they had it on the Pursers Desk but I know that wasn't true because one of my roommates complained about the noise from the Piano Bar and they gave her a different cabin. Cruising89143 Posted April 2, 2004 #4 Share Posted April 2, 2004 I agree with the above. I have seen that sign on every Carnival cruise. chuleta Posted April 2, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted April 2, 2004 I was wondering, I have had the same experience. It is hard to beleive that Carnival has that high of an occupancy rate. Of course they may just upgrade everyone ahead of time so they don't have the hassles at boarding time! KellyJean Posted April 3, 2004 #6 Share Posted April 3, 2004 On the Paradise in 2001, when I was having problems with my "neighbors", I was told that they always keep a certain # of cabins open in case of problems such as "domestic disputes", etc. in case they have to move somebody. SUSANITA Posted April 3, 2004 #8 Share Posted April 3, 2004 I think the time to inquire about upgrades is at the embarkation area, NOT at the Pursers desk. I've seen that sign on every single cruise I've been on "Ship is full", when I know for certain that it's not full. I think the Purser prefers to not deal with possibly hundreds of people asking for upgrades, can you imagine the logistical nightmare? I have heard of people asking at the embarkation area, and having luck there. I've heard of the cruiseline actually setting up a seperate table within the embarkation area to "sell off" upgraded cabins. I would start there. Good Luck, Marylynn! Cotton Posted April 3, 2004 #9 Share Posted April 3, 2004 A coupla cruises ago, I noticed the 'ship full, no upgrades available' at the Purser's desk. Two nights later at dinner, I asked a tablemate where her husband was (they were honeymooners), and she told me she had made a BIG mistake - and they would be getting a divorce when they get back home. She had gone to the Purser and asked for another cabin, and was shown TWO to choose from. If I remember correctly, she said she paid $100 to be put in a new cabin. For what it's worth - a TA once told me they reserve a dozen cabins on each cruise. Jasonsterling Posted April 3, 2004 #10 Share Posted April 3, 2004 I think generally there are probably no upgrades left at boarding. There may be rooms left on board but I would think Carnival would go ahead and move people up leaving mostly the lower rooms or inside catagories ect. However, it's true that the Purser's desk always has a sign that claims the ship is full even when it not. I'm sure it's just easier then dealing with all the passengers asking for a different room. dan40 Posted April 3, 2004 #12 Share Posted April 3, 2004 I heard about that newlywed couple. The first nite he took off his shoes and socks and she saw that his toes were a terrible mess. "What happened to your toes?" "When I was a kid I had Tolio." She says, "TOLIO? You mean Polio." "No." Says he, "I had Tolio." She begins to wonder what she has gotten into. Then he takes off his pants and she sees his knees are a horrible sight. "What happened to your knees," she askes? "When I was a kid I had KNEESLES." "KNEESLES?" she cries, "You mean Measles." "No," he says, "I had Kneesles" Now she is very concerned that she has made a serious error. Then he takes off his underwear, She takes one look and says, "I see you had a bad case of smallXXX too." Then she went to the Purser's desk. lynnber Posted April 3, 2004 #14 Share Posted April 3, 2004 Years ago my mother used to get special rates (four in a room) for putting together groups to go on cruises. These were older ships like the Emerald Seas and Leeward. Anyway, everytime she would get on board she would go up to the pursors desk and somehow convince them to give her a second room because it was too crowded. I also remember going on a cruise with a friend who picked up the waiter (or did he pick her up) and he 'magically' was able to secure an empty room for their frolics. Oh, those wild and crazy '80s.
