iMessage with social media plan

Good morning! I just wanted to confirm my impression that iMessage on an iPhone works with the social media plan. This is the first time we are leaving my kids with my in laws and I want to make sure they can reach us easily if they have questions but otherwise have no interest in being online. Thanks!
