raised seal birth certificates to enter Canada from US

Recommended Posts

Hello:

I am truly hoping someone can answer this important question for me. Both my wife, myself, and my daughter all have the yellow raised seal birth certificate cards that we received through the Vital Records division of the Dept. of Health. The issue date was 03-19-1999. The card states that it is a "true copy of the record" on file with the PA Dept. of Health.

We are travelling to Canada this summer, and my travel agent has informed me that these yellow cards are no longer valid since 9/11/01? Is this correct? I was planning on continuing to use these are proof of US citizenship to enter Canada. Please advise as to whether or not these cards are still usable and, if not, what course of action we should pursue.

Thank you.

I think the best thing you can do is go to the webiste of the USA and Canada and look at the documents required for Americans entering Canada and

I would check also about the documents required for re-entering the USA for sure.

I know the USA requires a picture ID when I drive acrosss the border. Also about what IDs are required for children, I assume you and your wife will be travelling together, but if not, there may special requirements about only one parent and the child leaving the country.

If you really want to be safe about what is accepted that would be the best thing to do.

I know they were talking about chaning the rules and some of it depended on how you were entering (private car or other way).

I don't remember what all of it was.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

A friend was returning to Canada from trip and traveled through the US coming back to Canada last month, and he saw a couple denied entry to the US- on their way home!! They were American citizens and had documentation that was fine to get into Canada- but they appeared to be having a difficult time getting back into The States with the ID they had.

As I said- it was a friend who watched and listened from a distance with no real knowledge of the situation- urban legend I know- but remember you also need to prove who you are to get back home.

Good luck and have a great trip!

Just a friendly suggestion. Passports are the way to go. With the way birth certificates look (all of them being different), you are more likely to run into issues. I had what I thought was a birth certificate when I went to get my passport for a cruise to Alaska this July, and they just laughed at it. It had a gold seal and looked official to me, but they wouldn't issue me a passport until I provide a legit county record of my birth. The one I had was issued by the hospital. For under $100, it seems to be a safe way to go. Getting hung up in customs is not fun trust me, I've been through it.
