Port in Rio -- can I walk out at 5 AM?

Hi all,

I have an early tour, and wonder if I can just walk out of the port in Rio (travelling on HAL Prinsendam, if it matters). Is the port always open? Can we just walk out, and no shuttle required? What about returning late at night? Is the ship gangway down all the time the ship is docked?

 You cannot leave unless Customs is there and until they are, the cruise ship won't let you off. Most tour companies work around the Customs schedule so there should be no problem.

You don't need a shuttle off the ship in Rio. 

 

We came back late  - well more like early morning after the Sambadome but there were many tours coming back all night long and the ship and the port was set up for that. They still do the normal screening as you return.
