Bus from Schipol

Recommended Posts

We are planning to take a bus from Schipol to our accommodation which is a short walk from the bus stop.  For payment on the bus, will we each (two of us) need to purchase a chip card at the airport or can we just use one card for both fares?   Will this card be good for buses and trains everywhere or do we need different cards loaded for city vs regional travel?  Very confused about how this will work and making sure we buy the correct card for the bus we need.

Which bus to where? How many times will you use a bus tram or train?

We will take the bus #300 from Schipol to Ouderkirk aan de Amstel where our Airbnb is located.  Not sure how many buses or trains we'll be taking while in Holland.  We do want to visit the Keukenhof, The Hague, Doetinchem, Vinkeveen, the Kinderdijk and possibly the Northern Coast as well as a day in Amsterdam....

Prepay a ticket and redeem the given voucher at the airport bookshops (Plaza, after Bagage Reclaim):

https://www.ns.nl/producten/en/overige-kaartjes/p/amsterdam-travel-ticket

https://www.ns.nl/producten/en/onbeperkt-reizen/p/amsterdam-region-travel-ticket

https://www.ns.nl/producten/en/onbeperkt-reizen/p/holland-travel-ticket

The Amsterdam tram and bus company compares some of the different tickets available: https://en.gvb.nl/tickets

OV Chip Card isn't necessary if your ticket is a printable e-ticket or loaded on your mobile (some tickets). Thanks to the public transport companies for adjusting that, having tourists to buy a 7,50 Euro Chip Card each (yes, each and each had to be topped up too!) was not very friendly..

If you buy an OV Chip Card for more choice or freedom, you can use it on any method of public transport throughout The Netherlands but you will have to check out and in again for each specific company. And some require(d?) a high balance, the railway had a 20 Euro minimal balance versus a low 3,50 Euro for a bus ride, not sure if that's still in effect.

Should I use this 3-day ticket myself? Will be bringing suitcases to Andaz Prisengracht; looks like we could do the second class train and then a metro - is it possible with luggage? Will be 3d pre cruise on our own.

Consider the Airport Express bus; https://www.connexxion.nl/airport-express-bus-stops/1242

https://www.connexxion.nl/amsterdam-airport-express/1241 with your 3-day ticket.

The metro stop would be Rokin, which is further than the bus or tram stops.

Airport Express (bus 397): Leidseplein stop, walk 7 minutes.

Tram from Centraal Station (tram 2, 11 or 12): Prinsengracht stop, walk 5 minutes along the Prinsengracht canal.

Metro: Rokin stop, walk 11 minutes.

I would avoid Centraal Station in this case, the Airport Express would be my choice. Or taxi.

Apparently our airbnb hosts have chip cards for us that we can reload once we get to our accommodation.  So, we'll just need to get tickets for the #300 bus from the airport to the home.  Can we pay by credit card on the bus or do we need to buy tickets in the airport for the bus and if so, where in the arrivals area would we do that?  I'm sure it's all pretty evident once we get there but I'd rather know ahead and be prepared!  Thanks!

It's a 6,50 Euro one way, on the bus it's debet and cash (not totally sure... been a while for me LOL). For the 397 bus they have a webshop to pre-purchase the 6,50 Euro tickets and you'll get a page to print. That might work on the different lines too, it seems to be the same general one way ticket and not a special 397 sort of ticket... https://www.connexxion.nl/amsterdam-airport-express/1241 -> https://eticket.connexxion.nl/en-US/

Either way, at Schiphol after any Arrivals/bagage reclaim you will "flush" out on the Plaza indoor square, walk outside and there is the bus station:

Connexxion Ticket & Info
Schiphol Main Square platform B15-B19
Every day 9:00-18:00hrs, Friday until 21:00hrs

ok great, thx, we have some leftover euros from a previous trip so we'll just use cash for the bus until we can get the cards loaded for future trips. Still cheaper than uber or a cab to our accommodation with only a short walk!  Unless it's raining when we arrive in which case we'll revert to the uber plan lol!
