Help!!! 1st time NCL'r...questions, questions

My husband and I just booked our cruise, an 11 day western caribbean on the Dawn. Not many cabins to choose from and we have ended up with a balcony stateroom # 10536. I have sooo many questions. I am afraid of motion sickness being this close to the front especially since I will be 4 months pregnant at this time. Also, I am disappointed about the shore excursions as a lot of them don't allow pregnant women to attend. I really wanted to go on a canopy tour and perhaps some tubing....any advice?....are they jarring adventures?

How's the ice tea on board and can we have chocolate covered strawberries delivered by room service. What about robes? We had robes on the Princess but I can't find anything that says the room attendants will provide them. One last question, we actually want to sit with different people at dinner as opposed to going it alone is this an option?

Thanks for any and all advice!! :D

Your cabin is a BA category balcony and the robes are normally in the mini-suites and higher. I would request robes the first time you meet your cabin steward, and he may be able to get them for you.

I've done a few zip lines and they can be really jarring and I don't think I would risk it while pregnant. I don't see why the cave tubing would be banned, when we did it (independently) the only problem would be walking on uneven trails carrying your tube to get into the river.

Chocolate covered strawberries aren't on the room service menu, unfortunately. My suggestion would be to order the anniversary package , you don't really need to be celebrating anything. The package includes the chocolate covered strawberries when you get on the ship as well as sparkling wine, dinner for 2 in Le Bistro with another bottle of wine and a cake, a cake party with champagned, free photo, and canapes delivered another night...all for only $79.

You can request to be seated with other guests in the main dining room, just tell them when you arrive. It won't be the same group every night, unless you arrange it with the other passengers at your first dinner.

Thanks for your advice.....going to have to pass on the anniversary package being pregnant...I think it just may be strawberries as opposed to chocolate covered ones at any rate........Will rethink the canopy tour....Thank you!!

Just so you know you can get the package with non alcohol. Your question about sitting with strangers at dinner, ABSOLUTELY, when you arrive for dinner you can request seating for two only or with friends if you have some on board or they will even ask if you would like to sit with others, and if you do there will be virtually no wait. that is one of the great things about freestyle dining it accomodates everyone's wishes, IF they know what to ask for.

I was pregnant while cruising and had terrible morning sickness. However, while cruising, my sickness went away completely. Then, I would worry that I lost the baby. But, as soon as we were in port, walking on ground oh boy, that nausea would come right back. I've heard other women say the same thing that somehow the rocking of the ship counter balanced the morning sickness. I hope you experience the same thing.

Please, do not do the Canopy Tour. Much too risky if you ask me. We did it last year and while it was a blast, I think it too dangerous for a pregnancy.

I think the ice tea is great. My only complaint in the buffet area is that the glass is too small. Often, by the pool, I wanted a TALL glass with ice and tea. Others, have fixed that by bringing their own insulated glass.

Order the Anniversary package and request non-alcohol.

Tip your room steward when asking for some robes and more than likely he/she can provide.

I don't think you will have a problem with motion sickness, as far as where your cabin is located. (Not taking the pregnancy into account - my opinion is strictly based on cruising.)

As for dining with others - this is the beauty of freestyle. You can CHOOSE to dine with others in the dining room, or if you're feeling like you just want to have a nice quiet dinner between the 2 of you, then you're not 'stuck' dining with others - even though you might like your tablemates. I just like having the option to choose whatever, whenever and with whomever.

I think the tubing company restricts pregnant women "just in case". There is no reason to take a chance, and for the company - they don't want to have a liability issue. It's always better to be safe than sorry.

Have fun!

unless you are one of those who have morning sickness for the most part of your pregnancy you will be just fine. As for the romance package, yes, you can get it with non alcohol bubbly and the canapy tour: well you may be able to sign up with a company that does not contract with the cruise line, but I can think of lots more fun things to do than a this one if you are pregnant. It would be better to be safe than sorry. NMnita

Okay thanks for all the advice but not really interested in the whole romance package thing...non alcoholic or not...all I was asking about were chocolate covered strawberries :p

What about cigarette smoke from other balconies, did anyone find this a problem?

On my last cruise, I was about four months pregnant. The motion of the ship did not make me sick (I was more sick on land than I was on the boat).

I absolutely would NOT do the canopy tour at that stage in my pregnancy though. We did a canopy tour this past July in Costa Rica, which was INCREDIBLE. It was one of our favorite activities of all time (and quite frankly, we had such a great day that I wound up pregnant in the first place!), but it's too strenuous to do while you're pregnant. It puts a strain on your body and you could get jarred around.

There are a lot of tours you can do while you're pregnant though. While I was pregnant we took a jeep tour, a catamaran tour and a beach tour. These days I'm on bedrest, but what I wouldn't do for another day at the beach in Mexico!

ENJOY your trip!!!

Yes cigerette smoke from other balconies can be a real problem. It is the luck of the draw who you are next to or above with how bad it can be.

I have been reading for days and this is the first thing that made me freak enough to write. We are traving on the Spirt 4/2 and my DD has asthma. I am in a panic about the smoke. Please write and help..

She can simply step inside the cabin if someone is smoking next door then go back out when they finish.

It is only noticeable if you are standing out on their balcony while they smoke, and even then, I've never found it to be too bad (and I HATE smoke).

Okay, I thought you could smell the smoke in the cabin...I know the pleople the cruise before you could have smoked in your room(which I am worried about)So you can't smell it while you are in your cabin from the people next door?

Ok I am VERY sensitive to smoke and if I am in my cabin and have my balcony door open and someone below or upwind of me is smoking I can smell it. but if you have your door closed then no.

But be SURE you do not have a connecting cabin, meaning one that connects to someone else's not part of your party. as I have had bad times with smoke coming through that connecting door even with towels stuffed under it etc.

I know a lot of people say it is not a problem and for them maybe it is not, only YOU know how sensitive you or in this case your daughter is, it is also a problem outside elevators and anywhere near the casino. It should not be a problem near elevators as there is no smoking in the halls and atriums but it is none the less.

I just got back from the norwegian sun and we had balcony. It does depend on the luck of the draw whether you will smell smoke on your balcony. Most of the time we did not but my daughter has asthma and we had to close the door 2 times during our cruise. If you are traveling with someone who has asthma be sure to bring inhaler. There are many places you may run into smoke on the ship. Sometimes in the atrium you can smell smoke when you get off the elevators, they allow people to smoke on one side and not on the other. Also many clubs allow smoking and you will just have to stay away from them if it bothers you. You cant get away from it entirely because some halls go around the casino which allows smoking and you cant help but smell it. The same goes for the buffet areas and pool areas smoking allowed on 1 side of ship and not the other. The inside sitting at buffet was non smoking. My daughter generally doesnt have to use inhalers during a reg day and had to use it around 5 times on the whole cruise.

it is not a major problem unless you are extremely allergic to smoke.

The reason I asked the question about the cigarette smoke was because on our last cruise, on the Princess, our whole cabin reeked of cigarette smoke. It took a couple of days of airing it out and lighting scented candles for the smell to go away. The room steward wasn't impressed that we were leaving lit candles in our room when we left the cabin, understandably, and he kept insisting that we keep the balcony doors closed if we didn't like the smell from the other passengers smoke. I was extremely annoyed by the fact that 1) not only did our cabin stink from the last people but 2) we had to shut the balcony door and couldn't enjoy the balcony that we paid extra for. My husband and I finally solved the problem on about the 3rd day when we decided to sit on the balcony and he read out loud to me. This annoyed them enough that they would actually go inside when we came out. Problem solved! Hope this works for us again! :D Going to have to think of a really boring book to bring;)
