Well that is a view, it is a commonly accepted practice.  Other lines do not let you bring on at all.

But you didn't buy that bottle of wine on that ship. So it's compensation, in a sense, to the cruise line for allowing you to drink a bottle of your own wine (not bought from them) in their dining room. For any business that sells alcohol, not just cruise lines, those sales are a huge part of their revenue. So if they're going to allow someone to bring their own alcohol with them, even a limited amount, they still want compensated for the loss of the sale. I don't drink wine, but my wife does. She just brings a glass of her own to the MDR, no fees for that. But even if she wanted the whole bottle, we'd much rather pay a $15 corkage fee than paying for a bottle of Carnival's wine that comes with a huge mark-up.
