Extreme ‘Signatures’ ?

Sea Turtle

Recommended Posts

I am weary of trying to get past the signatures that are line after line after line. What purpose do your extremely long signatures serve?

I personally would like to participate in more discussions; however, I do not have the time nor connection speed to weed through all of the excessive signatures to find the pertinent information. In fact I am booked on one of the group cruises, and as much as I would like to post to say hello and get acquainted the unnecessary info keeps me away.

If you truly feel you cannot streamline your signature, can you not turn your signature off after you’ve posted once on a thread? I wouldn’t mind looking at your lengthy signature once in a post but when you post, post, post, well, ...

P.S. Yes, I do have a signature, which is a graphic. And, if it interferes with your enjoyment of the postings I will gladly adjust and/or delete it. What are you willing to do?

Enjoy the day, and your next cruise!

I will be happy to turn off my signature after posting to a thread. I would have done that long ago if I had known that it was possible to do so. I now know that it can be done.

While I am definitely in the minority of ONE on this issue , I appreciate the opportunity to voice my opinion regarding long signatures without a lashing!!! Perhaps when I 'grow up' and get a faster connection I can breeze through all threads with the best of you!

Thanks again for listening to my thoughts. And, to Lilylady, thanks for the support.

Enjoy the evening, all.

You can double the size of your "minority", SeaTurtle. One option you have is choosing the "stop" icon on your toolbar. The first thing that "loads" on a webpage is the text. The last thing that loads are the images.

So, if you choose, hit the "stop" key immediately after the name of the first person to post on a "thread" appears. You'll stop any further images from "loading". The text will be fully "loaded".

I have tried the 'stop' in the past but haven't had success. What happens to me is that it will post everything that has loaded up until the time I hit the stop (including graphics) but then I am still missing all the other posts that were yet to appear. Do I need to change a setting or two on my system? Also, it still wouldn't help though with those signatures that list every cruise someone has been on or plans to go on, would it? Chris--

You had already posted without me knowing it while I was still typing my last reply. So please understand that my
quote:
Also, it still wouldn't help though with those signatures that list every cruise someone has been on or plans to go on, would it?

was in no way aimed at you specifically!!! I didn't even know you had posted.

LOL.

I think you really have a point though, In fact, it wasn't all that long the the board administation was requesting that we limit our signatures because the pages were taking so long to load.

Sorry, I just can't help it -- I like to see my list of cruises grow! Actually, some people have seen a past cruise in my signature and have e-mailed me with questions, so I thought it was helpful to have them listed. Since I don't have any graphics (other than my one disappearing clock), would mine really take any longer to load than if I didn't have my cruises listed? If so, I'll try really hard to remember to turn off my signature if I post a second time in a thread.

One helpful hint is to go to your control panel, then internet options, then advanced. Scroll down to multimedia and uncheck the show pictures box.

Sorry it takes so long some times. I remember when we had dial up. My trick was to click open a bunch of threads I thought I'd like to read, minimizing each as I went. Eventually, after I'd found about 5 or 6, the first one would have downloaded and I could read it at my leisure. When finished I'd find that the rest had downloaded. I still follow this drill to this day, even though I have very fast cable.

P.S. I unclicked my signature for you. :-)

I have a long signature, myself, but it has no GIFs in it. It is the animation, etc, that takes a long time to load, and personally, I hate those! The reason I post all my previous cruises, btw, is that many people want to know another cruisers experience, to help them judge whether or not the information they give is firsthand or secondhand. I have gotten many private emails from people asking about a previous cruise of mine, and I ALWAYS answer them. I have cable access, which is pretty fast, but some posts have so many GIFs in them that it still takes a long time to load.

The long sigs are not the problem. The problem are all the annimated giffs that some posters think look cute. Some are, but many are stupid and they do it because they can. Maybe the administrator should put a limit on them.

How could anyone asked me to "snuff" those three innocent, playful and intelligent dolphins?

Actually, your's is pretty small and simple, compard to some of the more elaborate and more silly ones posted.
the origianl poster is just asking us to not use them multiple times in postiing to the same thread. Which soulds like a good idea to me.

It's so easy....just unclick the box at the bottom of the 'Post a Reply' window.

Lets face it, the pictures and animated gifs are the main offenders.....but if those of us with a long list of cruises, let it post every time.....it does add lot of scrolling to a thread.

The gifs don't bother me. But I will tell you what does after I get my flame proof undies on...

What bothers me are posters who put HUGE pictures of their "little sailors" along with links to even more pictures of them.

Be honest - do you really think we want to see your little darlings? Also 9 times out of 10 if you think you have a "Gerber Baby"....you don't.

What about my "Gerber" puppy? Does he slow things down? He is web optimized and house broken. I have been hoping to get lots of "ooohs and aaahs", but none so far... I have limited my text to 2 cruises, a link and my name. I have also resisted the temptation to animate Rocket (my pup) to show you some of his cute little tricks.

voyagerfl--Yep, you got it!! Thanks for rephrasing my original thoughts. When threads are pages long and it's the same folks posting why waste the site’s space and people's time with the duplication of signature entries?

I hope you can 'tell' that I am all for 'freedom of expression' which is a luxury for us--I really like my graphic signature. And, to those who post all of their cruises--have at it--I used to post all of mine as well. However, once I've seen the list once on a thread, I'd much rather you fill up the pages with some other pertinent info. I'm always here searching for great info that is presented by all cruisers!

Thanks for your consideration of the concept of ‘un-clicking’ your signature after your first post in a thread.

Let's cruise!!!
