Motorcycle rentals

Just curious which islands are best to rent a motorcycle or scooter on. We have been to Kauai and seen most of it so may or may not want one here. Oahu is out. So we have Kona and Hilo on the Big Island and Maui. We are on the POA in early Aug. Husband has been riding bikes for over 20 years so no issues there. We are 40s and mostly healthy.
If you had to make the choice between car and bike which would you pick and why?
Thanks.

Our vote would be for Maui on a motorcycle.  There are lots of good roads that are easy to navigate and offer great scenery that can be enjoyed even more close up on a motorcycle than in a car.

Hi Silver Sweethearts would you say a motorcycle is doable the entire loop around island or no? Turning around at the end of better pavement?

There is  no one road that does an "entire loop around island".  Several highways would be involved in getting from one end of the island to the other.  Can you be a bit more specific on where you want to go?

Sorry I was talking more about the road to Hana and beyond the most. We are hoping to have it for both days on the POA.
Thanks

We aren't that familiar with motorcycles and how they handle uneven terrain, gravel road, pot holes, etc., but do be aware the road past Hana can be unpredictable due to weather and the above reasons.  We would personally not want to try it, but we are cautious sorts.

One issue that should be considered if you haven't done so already is where you are going to park the motorcycle overnight.  We know about rental cars, but don't know how safe it is to leave motorcycles alone outdoors all night.  Not to say anything is going to happen.  We just try to research everything in advance as much as possible.

I've been following this thread and wondering if renting a motorcycle on the big island of Hawaii wouldn't be better.  There is less traffic. Riding a "bike" through the lava fields to Mauna Kea Beach and Waimea and/or along the Hamakua Coast would be wonderful.  Even riding through VNP would be fun.  Just a thought.  The only issue would be that if you want to keep the motorcycle for two nights and the ship is only in Kona and Hilo for one night each it doesn't work.  JMO  Cherie
