Hello critics:

Long time reader of these boards so figured I would try to give my review from our limited ncl perspective:

myself (43) and wife (40) and two boys (9 yrs old and 20 month old)

we only sailed ncl one other time 2 years ago on breakaway out of nyc..same exact itinerary in the haven 2 bedroom stateroom which was a lucky upgrade.

This time on the dawn the 4 of us sailed in a family suite no balcony in room 12516

my in-laws joined us (balcony) stateroom #10012

day 1:

driving to pier from PA was a very easy 2 1/2 hour drive.. we all fit in my acura suv with 2 suitcases total a mid size stroller and 2 soft duffle bags filled to the brim but we did it. ( yes 6 of us in one vehicle.. crazy right??) we went over the GW bridge and navigation took us right up to park at the pier ($40 per day) 7 days =$280 payable upon entry... the parking garage is actually connected to the ncl pier and is only 2 levels... the ground level is only for buses.. taxi.. rideshare.. you need to be in the right lane and take the ramp to the top (2nd floor) to leave your car for the week. once the ship leaves they close the parking at the pier so it’s very secure and reopen it the morning of your return.

We arrived at the cruise terminal at 10:45 am and breezed through security. We made our way to the suite/ haven check in ( even though technically there is no haven on the dawn... they treat the suite guests with the same amenities. I thought that my in laws could stay with us and check in at the same haven/ suite area but that was not the case... they had to wait in the longer line for the non-suite passengers.

outside the haven check in there was a table displaying the specialty menus and a table for the spa services. TIP: if you booked a treatment on sail away day you got an additional 25 minutes free add on ( just be careful of the relentless UPSELL of expensive products more on that later) we were told at the dining table that the French restaurant had a strict NO SHORTS policy that was iron clad... well guess who didn’t pack ANY pants? Correct... myself and my father in law. I even went in the haven lounge and asked one of the concierge if this was correct and was there any way to skirt the rule being we are a suite passenger... the answer was NO so we had to change our party of 6 from le bistro to the la cuchina Italian restaurant.

no big deal simple mistake... but I don’t remember EVER seeing the NO SHORTS rule anywhere before booking...

The haven lounge area at the pier was beyond crowded which may be due to the fact that there was fresh squeezed juices... cookie platters..danish of sorts and piping hot coffee at your disposal... it was also about 95 degrees in there because my future fellow passengers were shoulder to shoulder... so with us having our 20 month old son in tow we opted to stand right outside the lounge along with my in-laws and were told that when we get escorted on the ship my in-laws were welcome to come along with us.

I think we were on board at 11:30am and sitting at O’sheans Irish bar/ pub and found our first meal. Fish and chips... Reuben sandwich.. Chicago style hot dog and nachos that were loaded with extra cheese and crumbled bacon...and 4 drinks of the day for the adults... we all had the UBP and (3) SDP which wee stamped on our cruise cards. I ordered a soda for our 9 yr old everytime at lunch or dinner and never had a problem. And we ordered a glass of whole milk for our 20 month old that we poured into his sippy cup.

after a quick lunch we headed out to explore the ship and get settled into our family suite which was enormous compared to the in-laws balcony stateroom.

Sailaway was great... nice weather.. windy as usual... saw lady liberty and went under the Verrazano bridge

the ship at first was hard to navigate... some floors did not go from front of ship to back.. you had to get in an elevator or take stairs up a floor then come down again to get to where you were going. That for me was hard to get used to... we basically asked the workers how to get places the first couple of days but eventually figured it out by day 6.

Our room had had a huge king bed with the most comfortable mattress I’ve ever slept on. Our 9 yr old chose the Murphy style bed every night because it was a full size bed with a 10” thick comfy mattress that he loved... and we also had requested a crib for the room for our 20 month old to sleep in which looked nice..and was a graco brand if you were wondering.

Our room steward was Marvin

our Butler was Nessan

and our concierge was Roel

We requested towel animals from Marvin and he was happy to oblige..Marvin was amazing the entire trip... our room was kept so nice even with 2 kids!!!

Our 20 month old spilled a half glass of milk on our mattress before bed. I called Marvin and explained...he quickly came to our room and within an hour we were sleeping on a new mattress... just like that... no worries..

Nessan was always leaving us special treats in our room everyday and also left bowls of peanut M&M and gummy bears which we enjoyed. He emptied out the mini fridge and replaced it with 12 large bottles of water that we purchased for the week.

Roel took care of our last minute requests for dinner reservations

he did tell me that the Venetian restaurant had a NO SHORTS policy as well which we mentioned to our butler and Nessan was like listen...you do not need pants for the venitian... you can go in with dress shorts.. which we did... and when we got there guess what we saw?? Basketball jerseys... bikini tops.. and lots of shorts... so I don’t know where the miscommunication was coming from.

we ate at the aqua the first night and it was delicious... the menu offered a good variety for all tastes and the service was top notch... we sat down to eat at 7:30 and were done by 9pm and with 2 tired kids we Strolled the ship a little to walk off desert and were tucked in by 10 pm.

ill try to write more tomorrow..thanks for coming along for the ride.

-Mark

Wow, you have sailed NCL twice and both times did that tired Bahamas cruise.  Why?

Great question.. it was more for the sail dates then the stops. I think next yr we will do the Bermuda itinerary. That way we get to relax there for 3 days... best of both worlds

Loving this!

Thank you so much - as for the "tired" Bahamas route...I figure any vacation on a floating resort at sea with concierge and butler is better than any day at work. Bermuda > Bahamas any day, but still...it's VACATION!!!

On the Dawn in 10 days - thank you so  much for the review and look forward to hearing more - we too will be missing our Haven but having all of the suite benefits may dampen the loss of the private pool / lounge.

Did you happen to notice if there were either plugs or USB ports by the bed?  Looking forward to reading more.  Thanks!

The only plug (singular) that we noticed was one on the desk vanity area that we used for both our cell phones. Did not see any USB ports for entire room

Our thoughts exactly...it’s a nice vacation indeed.. lol

we did miss the haven that spoiled us on the breakaway. People were going out to the pool at like 6:45 am to ‘claim’ their spots/ set up camp for the entire day. That was frustrating. We did see people moving claimed couches if there was just a folded pool towel placed on the cushion.. which was funny when the people return back to area 5 hours later shaking their head lmao!!

Day 2 sea day and dinner at Cagneys:

We started EVERY morning at modernos suite breakfast area and it was absolutely amazing everytime. It was a great way to enjoy a peaceful morning away from the craziness of a busy buffet. Plus the French press coffee was wonderful. The creamer in the table is actually milk... not creamer... you need to ask for creamer and they will bring it. I figured this out because no matter how much ‘creamer’ I put in my coffee it didn’t get lighter...the actual creamer makes all the difference..The menu had enough options to not get ‘bored’ eating the same things...side note: in modernos the room is kinda small...a few mornings there were 3 women who ate breakfast together and literally poured an entire bottle of drug store perfume on. The second time we were being sat by them my wife noticed and said no absolutely not. Please sit us on the other side of the room. They actually had to push (2) two person tables together for us to accommodate the 4 of us. When you first enter modernos it’s all tables for two... then you walk past the buffet area and it opens up to about 7 tables for four or more but it’s a tight area. So the women with the drug store perfume on was overbearing you could ‘taste’ the perfume. No joke. It was that bad.

Tip: mojito bar is actually inside modernos...try to only have one coconut mojito... I dare you...

after breakfast we sat by the main pool.

So I know the rules of the adult pool. I was sitting on the edge of the wall with my feet in the 6 inches of water...my wife brought over Maddox our 20 month old. He sat on my lap for a few mins for a picture then like most kids he wanted to feel the water. Now again I was not even in the water myself.. just my feet. I held Maddox and just lowered his feet to touch the 6 inches of water. As soon as his tiny feet hit the 82 degree water I feel a tap on my shoulder. I figured it was my wife asking about the drink of the day... wrong... it was a female deck attendant reminding me that no children are allowed in the adult pool and please use the kiddie pool in the back of the ship. It was literally as soon as his feet hit the water.

so off we go to the kiddie pool. Unless you have kids about 4 years old or older you will not like the kiddie pool. Because Maddox is 20 months old you (the parent) have to be in the water with them ( for their safety) I say that because the back of the ship was made up of like 3-4 little pools... 2 pools had slides that I actually went down holding Maddox. There is a tiny pool with about 8 inches of water in it that Maddox enjoyed splashing in. There is also a kids temperature hot tub... maybe 90 degrees... it felt slightly warm so kids could enjoy it.

Here is the problem with the kiddie pool area:

NO LIFEGUARD period. There were kids maybe 6-10 yr olds in the pool that were breaking every public pool rule there was. Kids were climbing UP the slides as others were going down.. 3 kids were going down together instead of waiting ones turn..a lot of pushing..lots of foul language... and kids not ‘yielding’ to the little kids age 2-3 in the pool. That was frustrating.

There was no place for parents to sit close and supervise (design flaw) they only had tiny chairs and tiny loungers on the side of pool that adults were forced to squeeze into ( not one kid ever sat in a lounger or chair... they were all in the water!!!) remember the deck attendant who tapped my shoulder at the main pool? Nowhere to be found. No deck attendant EVER visited the kiddie pool area. And lots of older 6-10 yr olds were taking residency there acting like...unsupervised kids... while their parents were at the main pool getting their moneys worth out of the booze package!! Lol. Some parents of the little kids took the liberty of ‘correcting’ the unsuitable actions of other people’s older kids which I thought was funny..but appropriate.

dinner at cagneys:

all 6 of us went to dinner Maddox ordered off the kids (free) menu grilled cheese... they made it like a triple decker club sandwich which looks different for a 20 month old so he decided he was not eating it. Our 9 yr old Mason was upset that he had to order off the kids menu and wanted a steak... so I shared mine with him.

The food at cagneys was Delicious I ordered my ribeye medium but it came out well... our waitress said to try it and although it was cooked well ( no pink) it melted in my mouth. Everyone’s food tasted great and deserts were yummy. My in-laws ordered the clearly marked 4.99 up charge giant shrimp cocktail (3) that looked amazing and my father in law stated it was worth every penny. The waitress brought over a Cesar salad for mason because she noticed him eating some of my father in laws (no charge) she also let both our kids order the adult desert of their choice (also no charge)

dinner took about 2 hours and we all agreed picking cagneys as one of our ‘free’

3 specialty dining options was a great choice. We all added $5 additional tip to each of our bills. You see when you have the dining package they ask for all the room cards and bring out 4 individual checks. the wait staff honestly worked non stop that night. So our waitress got an additional $20 which we thought was well deserved.

After dinner stroll around the outside deck

We then went to a magician (named Po I believe) and had a great time. We asked our concierge about seating and he said to enter stardust theater on the left side and sit in the suite area (show your key card for access) we asked if the in-laws can join us and he said absolutely.

the beauty of being in a suite is you don’t need to show up to any show 30-40 mins early because you basically have a section that always had great seats. Plus showing up 30 mins early with a 20 month old would’ve awful. ( people with small children can relate)

one thing we noticed the NCL can improve on is not ‘stacking’ their shows/ entertainment back to back in the same venue. People who were there to see the dating game show that was before the magician stayed for the magician as well making it nearly impossible for a party of 4 or more non suite guests to find seats to sit together.

10 pm came quick that night.. walked back to room.. greeted our newest addition towel animal that Maddox would destroy after 10 minutes trying to give it ‘kisses’ and drifted to sleep in the most comfortable mattress at sea.

More to come in a few hours ( my job gets in the way) lol

Day 3: port Canaveral Orlando beaches:

ship arrived at 1:00pm

we booked transportation at 1:30 to cocoa beach next to Ron Jon surf shop

It was 95 degrees that day...we used our priority disembarkation and got right off the ship. We walked through a maze of ropes to stand at the bussing area waiting to be transferred to cocoa beach. The bus was huge like a new motor coach that transports like 55 passengers at a time.

we were dropped off at the bus terminal next to Ron Jon.

when we booked the transportation the site made it seem like Ron Jon had a cabana bar that overlooked the ocean where you can sit. So not the case. You had to walk a long hot 3 blocks to a crowded cocoa beach that made you ‘rent’ chairs and umbrellas.. so the 6 of us rented 2 umbrellas and 4 chairs for $57 dollars plus $10 security charge (cash only) you get back once you tell them you are leaving... so they can re-rent your spot.

the beach was decent but when you walked about 20 feet from the water it was covered and I mean covered in green seaweed... like 6 inches thick that you had to walk through to get to the water. Once in the water you eased through thick seaweed... it was gross... and it smelled like dead fish... no exaggeration. Waves of thick smelly seaweed were crashing on you... it was everywhere due to high tide I guess. I thought being a public beach on Memorial Day weekend the city would have combed the beach. Nope. Now I know why a lot of passengers didn’t get off the ship.

there was no bathroom... had to use Ron Jon. And no where to buy snacks.. water.. beer. I asked the woman who rented us the beach chairs and she said you would need to walk across the 6 lane highway to purchase beer or snacks. I went to Ron Jon’s and bought waters for a dollar and a few bags of pretzels for the group. We left at 5 pm to go back to the ship ( which was very easy)

We booked the transportation $39 total ( adults were $15 mason age 9 was actually $9 and Maddox being under 3 was free)

i did get a shore excursion credit for $50 which was nice

bamboo restaurant at 7:00 pm was delicious... the staff was so friendly and we were done by 8:30. We went to see a musical jazz performance but left about 15 minutes into it ( boring... not our cup of tea) headed over to the video arcade... which was pretty small but had some fun games that our 9 yr old liked...and a curved air hockey table that was interesting.

The games were $1.65 each and after about 10 games we called it a night.

back to the room. Cruising with a 20 month old reminds you that you are constantly on borrowed time.

hindsight: not sure if we would have gotten off the ship in port Canaveral.

2 years ago when we stopped here we didn’t get off because my brother in law was getting married on the ship that day. I guess we now realize that we were not missing much.

off to bed and looking forward to great stirrup cay!!!

We were actually on the same cruise and did the Orlando wheel/sea aquarium/ and Madam Tussauds. It was an excursion through the ship and was fun. I understand an hour bus ride each way with a baby is probably not the best idea( there were some babies on the trip) but if others are interested all three places are in he same building and all are air conditioned. It was perfect for the hot day.

That was a great choice... especially being air conditioned I can imagine.. being from PA we were happy just being on a beach. Next time we will skip the cocoa beach!! Lol

Expectthebest, Thank you so much for this review!  We will be on the Dawn with the same itinerary 6/15 - 22.  Not in a suite, but it's good to hear your take on things, since there haven't been other Dawn sailings with this itinerary recently.  I look forward to more installments.

And toothy26, thanks for the excursion tip; I wasn't planning to get off, but now I'll look into that.

You are going to have a wonderful time!! If you enjoy hot tubs there is a large one at the extreme front of the ship on deck 13. Not many passengers realize this until about day 4. Thanks for following along!!

Day 4: great stirrup cay

i think the ship docked around 10 am.

we had pre-ordered the (2) person clamshell $39 and we got one for the in-laws as well so $78 all in. You get the voucher for the clamshells the night before in your cabin. On the voucher it instructs you to visit the tour office or something on great stirrup cay (don’t do this) it also states you can disembark the ship at 10:30 am along with passengers who booked excursions.

We eat another great breakfast in modernos and get our bathing suits on.. lather up on sunscreen and water shirts. Pack our towels and off I go ( my wife melissa and the kids stayed behind to get off the ship with the in-laws who slept in) down to le bistro to enjoy priority disembarkation. I have my keycard in hand along with both vouchers (remembering the advice of my wife... try to get 2 clamshell loungers next to each other so we can be close to her parents) I was on a mission... what could go wrong??? Well I arrived at le bistro meeting area to get waltzed off the ship like a ‘kennedy’ when our group was escorted down a few flights of stairs and through an immaculately clean galley kitchen we emerged on Deck 4 to a sea of people... crowds of people... just standing there waiting... surely we can bypass this raucous crowd? Nope. A deck attendant controlling the line saw our group of 20 suite passengers and pointed ‘up’ the stairs AWAY from the exit to disembark and sternly said head up the stairs to deck 6 that is the back of the line.

a well dressed woman resembling Martha Stewart swiftly reminded the gentleman that we infact are ‘suite passengers’ to which he replied.. so are all these people!! When you book an excursion you also can disembark the ship first... which most if not all the people in front of us had done.

I was in shock... how am I going to beat the crowds off this ship.. how can I ensure that our rented clamshells would not only be in a prime location but also together as the love of my life requested??? It did say on the vouchers ‘first come first served’

im embarrassed to say this next part is true... I rushed to the nearest house phone on deck 4 and dialed our concierge...told him what we were being put through... and he assured me he would handle it... he was on his way to me at my courtesy phone location on deck 4.. I couldn’t wait..I was not going to go ‘up’ the stairs away from the exit... so I walked towards the male deck attendant who again reminded me I needed to go the other way when I saw 2 women in their mid 30’s shuffling behind him moving towards the ships exit when I quickly pointed to them stating to the deck attendant ‘my wife’ and he smiled.. unhooked the velvet rope and allowed me to slide in behind them. Again.. I’m not proud of my actions but desperate times call for... you get it.

ok so now I’m getting on the tender:

tip: when you are going ashore the top deck of the tender fills up first... cause of the open air and obvious view... ask to sit on the downstairs section which is the underneath section and walk all the way to the back.. you will see a metal wall in front of you with ropes attached. When you arrive on the island the tender’s metal wall will come down and you will be first off the tender. The passengers who opted to sit in the sun on the top deck are actually the LAST to get off the tender... I think the tenders hold about 150 people... just sayin..

so I get off the tender and bypass the photo people ... I’m looking for the tour office to hand in my (2) vouchers...and when I find the place the girl says oh just go find (2) clamshell loungers and hand the vouchers to the attendant. Since I’m there I ask her...where are the best clamshell loungers located??...she said if you are looking for peace and quiet head down the right side of the island next to the large rock wall... she was right... the entire ship landed on the middle of the island and that’s where people dropped anchor (get it?)which was crowded.. but a quick walk to the right side proved to be tranquil.

you basically find 2 loungers you like and a guy will come over asking if you have your voucher and he sets up the clamshell and takes your voucher.. waiters come by frequently to bring you drinks... it was great.

there is a included huge buffet (free) that ncl puts out for you... it’s only open from like 11:00am until 1:00pm so get some food between those times...

make sure you wear flip flops or shoes to the buffet area the tile around the buffet is literally 1000 degrees and your feet will burn..

the sand at GSC is soft and clean... the water was like bath water... and no waves or ripples whatsoever. The water is so clear you actually see fish... little guys and some like a foot long also enjoying the water. Don’t worry they keep a distance from you. Lol

tip: bring those towels clips with you... around 3 pm the sun will be starting to set in front of you on the beach...if you are in a clamshell you can clip a towel to the front opening of the clamshell to block the sun so you don’t burn.

headed back to the ship about 5 pm on a tender... this time the ‘top’ deck of the tender gets off first... just FYI.

We headed to our room to relax and shower and get ready for the Venetian dining room.

the Venetian dining room was very nice... a little fancier then aqua..we were told by the concierge it was  and my father in law swears his streak tasted better there. I reminded him that it’s all the same kitchen..the Venetian felt bigger then aqua and the service was much slower. We almost skipped desert... almost. Lol.

after dinner we headed back to the room.. we were all exhausted from the beach.. sand and fun in the sun.

Another day in the books... time on the ship literally flies...

next up Nassau !!!!

Just a FYI, there are zero pools on cruise ships that allow for diapered children, only DCL and some RCL ships have small shallow splash areas for them. Yes, the kiddie pools on the Jewel class ships look like they are for toddlers, but they are not. There is signage somewhere.

LOVING THIS SO MUCH!!!!

It's so funny...I rarely get on cruise critic until I make the final payment for my next cruise...then I start reading the Boards weekly, then twice weekly, then daily so that 1 month before every cruise I am just stalking the Boards constantly!

Reviews and info like this are so, so helpful.

Very excited to find some of those hidden spots next week...like @skynyrd we will be on the June 15th Bahamas Dawn!

As of 5 minutes ago, making my hubby wash his khakis in case he wants to eat at the Venetian - would have missed out if you hadn't given the advice above,.

Can't wait to read more! Amy

When did you reserve the clamshell?  We tried online before our upcoming cruise but we never saw them available.  Thank you

We reserved it 2 nights before... it was on the excursion paper left in our stateroom. I picked it up and noticed it was only $39 bucks and handed it to the butler... or if you are in a mini suite or lower I’m sure you can just drop it off at the excursion desk on deck 7.

We didn’t see them online / pre cruise either... so when I read the excursion ppwk in our stateroom I noticed the $39 price.. and marked off (2) so the in-laws can get some shade

on GSC there is shade with loungers under the large leafy trees but they a soo far away from the water...

also there are a ton of clamshells on the right side of island ( where we were) but get there early cause the first (2) rows closest to the water go quick!

Honestly we did not notice any signage whatsoever.. even the deck attendant that scolded me for putting Maddox’s feet in the adult pool. That would have been a great opportunity to school me on the rules of NCL pools regarding children in swim diapers.. but she did not.

I can say that we were sitting in the kid pool area with prob 7 other kids under 2 yrs old and swim diapers never came up. Could be along the lines of written somewhere in the mountains of ppwk you receive..along with the adult ‘families’ that would take over the shaded hot tubs for 4 hours at a clip... drink booze while in said hot tub and NEVER come out to use the restroom. You see what I’m getting at.

Thanks for following along
