GrJ Berkshire Posted June 12, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 12, 2019 Osborne house is the best in Cowes area, only a mile from East Cowes Red funnel ferry . Beautiful house and grounds designed by Victoria and Albert, their favourite home.
John Bull Posted June 13, 2019 #3 Share Posted June 13, 2019 (edited) Are you on one of the few small cruise ships which call at Cowes? If so, it's a tender port - you'll be moored offshore in Cowes Roads. First thing to say is that whereas tendered ports are all-too-frequently missed because of the dangers of transferring to tenders in high seas, Cowes Roads is extremely well-sheltered and that's not likely to be a problem. As GrJ's post, the obvious suggestion is Osborne House. https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/osborne/ I don't know for sure, but very probably you'll be tendered to (west) Cowes, the main part of the town on the yachties' side of the river. So you'd need to take the chain ferry across to East Cowes, then a ten-minute bus ride (any bus, they run every 15 - 20 minutes) and ask the driver to put you off at Osborne House. The Isle of Wight is charming in an out-of-date kinda way, it's only just caught up with the 20th Century Lots of other sights on the island, but altho' it's quite small the roads are slow so you won't achieve much if you venture elsewhere, especially by bus. For instance Carisbrooke Castle https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/carisbrooke-castle/ You need bus route 1 to Newport (all the island's roads lead to Newport ) Service every 8 to 10 minutes, 20 minute ride. Then bus route 38 from Newport Half-hourly service, 20-minute circuitous route. Then a 5 - 10 minute uphill walk to the castle.
