We will be cruising with Uniworld Paris to Normandy in August.

is a dinner jacket for men necessary for any dinner?  I know they say men may want to bring a jacket for the captains dinner, but we are trying to manage luggage weight restrictions and do not wish to pack a jacket unless absolutely necessary.

Thanks for any help.

No, it isn't. I don't pay a whole lot of attention to what people wear, but would say there were probably 5, max, who were wearing a dinner jacket. Some had ties, some just a dress shirt. Looking at pics, my husband wore a dress shirt and cardigan, our travel companion wore a shirt and tie. Don't waste your weight (and space) on a jacket.

If by dinner jacket you mean a tuxedo, then absolutely not. If you mean a sports coat or blazer, then it is not really necessary.  I nearly always travel to Europe with a blazer, but that's my preference. Sometimes I'll wear a tie, but usually not. On river cruises, I've never felt overdressed wearing it, but one wouldn't be out of place without one.  I've done 5 Uniworld cruises as well as others on Emerald and Viking and I would say that the standard of dress on Uniworld is higher than on the others. "Smart casual" is generally the rule, and shorts are not allowed at dinner in the dining room.

Not necessary.  My experience was somewhat different from Robin's, I would say that perhaps half of the gents were wearing sports coats for Captain's /Farewell receptions (I am assuming that is what you are referring to), but it is completely optional.

Since we travel w/ Uniworld in Summer my husband wears a dress shirt & tie for the Welcome/Farewell dinners.  About half the men on our trips wear sports coats, the others just go w/ a dress shirt & maybe a tie. It really comes down to personal preference for most. If we traveled in the shoulder season he would definitely pack a sport coat but Summer is just too warm.  As a bonus-a tie takes up less room in the suitcase than a sport jacket.  Enjoy your trip, Paris to Normandy is a fantastic itinerary!!

Things do change!  We took a Uniworld cruise about 10 years ago, and for the captain’s dinner there was exactly one man without a sport coat!

It seems that dress codes have changed over the years on ocean cruises as well.

Uniworld folks tend to dress better than Viking folks but I saw few mens' jackets on Uniworld.  I did not bring one.  Wore collared shirt, usually long sleeved but would wear short sleeves if hot, and slacks with loafers, not sneakers. Most men on Uniworld dressed similarly. However you would not look out of place with a suit coat at dinner.
