When should trip insurance be purchased?

In the past I have usually purchased trip insurance weeks before the final payment date.  This time my big box travel agent said I should get it on the final payment date.  It sounds reasonable to me.   I'd like to get the opinions of others about this.

Thanks.

If you don't need the "Cancel For Any Reason" and / or the pre-existing medical conditions coverage for any of you, any traveling companions or your non-traveling family members and you have no prepaid non-refundable trip costs, there's no big financial benefit to get it now.

A minor financial benefit to get it now is if you will have a birthday and the policy you want will be more expensive later, then you will want to consider getting it now.

I hope this makes sense,

Steve
