Attire after a few cruises?

Catrin

Recommended Posts

Hi there everyone....

This will be our fourth cruise... all on Carnival...
I am putting together my outfits for dinner, and I find I am not going "all out" this year. My formal nights will be skirts and sweater sets.. very simple and elegant.. but not too dressy.
My casual nights are capri pants and tops....

Do any of you find yourself dressing differently after a few cruises?

Would love feedback!
Cathy

Over 40 cruises, still doing the full tux.
Why dress down, you can do that everywhere else.

If anything, it's that I've gone *more* formal over the years.

I find that I pack less. I dress way more casual during the day than I did on my first cruise. Also if I don't feel like going to the dining room one or two nights it's no big deal to me. In the past I wouldn't have dreamed of missing it!

Cathy...
I'm like you and this is only my second cruise. Last year I wore cocktail-type dresses every night...this year I'm also going for Capris on casual nights. We're doing early dining this time, and I just don't want to worry about it.
Plus, I'm packing fewer clothes so I can smuggle a couple of bottles in my suitcase...was too paranoid to do that last year!

It seems to me that I could easily take half the clothes I pack and still have more than enough to wear.

As far as formal night attire goes I think I have come full circle. I started out in a tux then went to a business suit now I am going back into a tux. I think it's just important to dress formally on FORMAL night.

Not sure where I get that

Happy Cruising

Catrin, I am still going formal on formal nights after 15 cruises, but I am finding myself putting more emphasis on LESS shoes LOL! I am determined to build my wardrobe around 3 pair of shoes for my upcoming cruise, will leave lots more room for the bottles! I don't know about the rest of us girls, but even on casual nights I like to dress with a nice skirt and a cute top. It's the only time I actually get to dress up and "go out" at night all nice and stuff, so I make the best of it!

I have 10 cruises under my belt starting in 1969 (yes 1969). Formal nites I have become dressier (more income, more dresses on hand). However, back in the dark ages (1969) there was no such animal as casual. Men wore jackets/tis every nite and women cocktail/nice wedding reception dresses. Now with casual nites I tend to wear silk pants and dressy (gauzy, slightly glittery ) tops. I did consider capris outfits for my 3/28 cruise but was able to limit packing better with pants and tops. I guess I tend to plan & pack with the least number/weight of pieces involved. just checked my 3/28/04 pack list and I wore everything I packed. This was a first.

I do capris for regular nights - but for formal night I still go all out! I do not mind if my husband does not want to - I make sure he dresses nice but I will still go all out.

Thanks for your imput!!

I think I am going to find one "dressy dressy" as my kids call it.... something slinky and formal...

The second formal night I may go less.... but still dressed up and simple.

I must admit that I have gotten more casual for a few reason. After my toddler covered my shoulder with spag. sauce on formal night, less shoes and more toys in the luggage, less luggage because of hauling her around, rewear skirt with different top and change after dinner. Also some of the excitement has worn off.

I also love to dress up on the formal nights. Have done so on each cruise. It is like going to a nice restaurant, having a lovely dinner and a show after. To me it is a lot of fun. Looking at all of the beautiful dresses and the nice suits and tux that there make it a party.

Between our first cruise and our last cruise there have been some definite changes. We don't normally dress up except for weddings and funerals and I wear smart casual to work. My DH bought a good suit with all the accessories and I've coordinated my formal wear so that I only need one pair of shoes. I keep trying to color coordinate my outfits so that I can pack less clothing and fewer shoes. I didn't wear everything I packed this last cruise so it's still a work in progress. We will be on the Glory May 29th. This will be our 13th cruise (hope its not unlucky) I still love to dress up not formal every night but nice outfits. I love clothes it is my weakness. I am sure I take way to much but to me dressing is part of the fun of cruising. Our best friends usually cruise with us we start planning our wardrobes months in advance When we go shopping we always say to each other could I wear this on a cruise.

I may be nuts, but I enjoy myself more when I am dressed up. If I am schlocking around in casual clothes...I just don't feel special.
When I am on a cruise, I prefer to feel special.
Just me.

I certainly have reduced the amount of stuff I take. I also have gone more towards casual and mix and match. I also recycle. ;-)As for formal night, I go with lightweight cocktail dress and same shoes/bag.

On our upcoming cruise, I am taking bathing suits and thsirts/coverups for day. I took shorts last time plus bathing suits. No one wore shorts.

This is 20+ cruises for us. I do still like to go all out for formal night. I have to admit we have toned down the other nights a bit. I have not made the transition to capris, but like the idea.
The shoes are my biggest problem. I so want to reduce the number I bring. When I went over the inventory of what I need to bring I have it down to 9 pairs... and that with making the decision not to bring sneakers. I don't know how I can get that down to 3.

Till we cruise on Glory again

Ladies with shoe problems.

For all eveningwear, my advice is to find a nice pair of silver shoes. With the exception of gold, I have yet to find a color that the silver shoes don't look great with. I like a muted silver, not the shiney type. Victoria's Secret has the best color, I think they call it platinum or silver. I've been on the silver shoes soapbox ever since my first cruise when I ended up with 9 pairs of shoes. I've gotten it down to 3. Either a pair of sandals or espadrilles for casual, tennis shoes for workout and the silver heels for nightwear. (I've been known to nix the tennis shoes if I know I'm going to be lazy for the week). My only quandry now is which pair of silver shoes to take as I've got at least 6 pairs.

DH and I like to "vacate" while on vacation and generally don't enjoy dressing up; we consider a garment bag to be a bad sign on a vacation!

Bathing suits, cover-ups, shorts, t-shirts, sneakers, Teva sandals, Birkis, a baseball cap, some little washable linen skirts/tops, a few sundresses, capris...you get the idea.

DH considers a linen or Tommy Bahama collared shirt w/khakis dressy enuf, thank you. I have to agree.
