Boarding in Rome on October 3rd. first time traveler there. We want to go a few days early to "see the sights" in Rome.  Any advice on how many days early we should arrive to prevent overload? And what are the "must see" attractions????

Depending on how much you want to see.    2-3 days would be plenty.   The first day will probably be limited if jet lagged.  You can do most of it on foot and public transport or if you desire there are many options for tours.

Must See -   (good article).

3 nights would be good for a first time trip. Must sees are Colosseum/Forum (buy tickets far in advance from the official website which is coopculture). Vatican Museums (buy reserved tickets ahead of time also from Vatican website. Night tours on Friday nights only are really nice and usually go to around October). St Peters  is also a must see. Other must sees would be Trevi, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona, Parthenon - basically all of the places you will see just walking around. Everyone will have their own opinion of must sees but the ones at the top are absolute musts and the best tours need to be reserved well in advance. Especially if you want to see the undergrounds and upper levels of Colosseum. Try and stay as close to the Pantheon as possible. That is the bullseye for the surrounding sites. Have fun!
