Rare taxatty Posted December 16, 2019 #1 Share Posted December 16, 2019 We've just returned from a terrific Navigator cruise--our favorite way of spending a relaxing and fun weekend. The only negative to the cruise was the current status of the snorkeling area at Coco Cay's Chill Island, where we've been many times before. There used to be a large area beyond the rock barriers where there was plenty of coral and sea grass with numerous and many different kinds of fish. As of yesterday, either because of the effects of Hurricane Dorian, RCI's work on the island's beaches, or other reasons (depending upon whom you ask there) the coral with has now mostly been covered in sediment all the way out to the orange ball barriers with some sea grass poking through, and the number and types of fish are way down from before. Other snorkelers we spoke to had the same opinion. The snorkeling and swimming there is still fun and the Chill Island beach itself is very nice, but it's harder to see fish and there's not much coral to attract them. Hopefully, this situation will cure itself over time.
Clarea Posted December 16, 2019 #2 Share Posted December 16, 2019 Sorry to hear this, we enjoyed snorkeling out there many times.
tigers04champs Posted December 17, 2019 #3 Share Posted December 17, 2019 We had the same problem this past week. It was definitely lack luster on the snorkeling side. It had also stormed the night before we got there, so the water wasn't as clear as normal either. Also, a ton of shells on the beach. Had to be careful where we were walking. BTHodgeman Posted December 17, 2019 #4 Share Posted December 17, 2019 We agree. Tried to snorkel there in October and the water was way too cloudy and there wasn't much to see even when you could see.
