duquephart Posted January 20, 2020 #1 Share Posted January 20, 2020 Flam Railway or Voss, Geilo & Bergen Railway? Decisions, decisions!
kaisatsu Posted January 20, 2020 #2 Share Posted January 20, 2020 So the choices are Drive to Flåm, take the train from Flåm to Voss, drive back to Eidfjord Drive to Voss, take the train from Voss to Geilo, drive back to Eidfjord In either case, you'd be doing the section of the Bergensbana between Voss and Myrdal, so the difference in the train is the Flåmsbana vs the Myrdal-Geilo stretch. These are very different kinds of scenery, so it depends on what you want to see. The Flåmsbana is an interesting feat of engineering, climbing over 850 m up into the mountains in a relatively short distance. The views are primarily over the Flåm valley with waterfalls and greenery (assuming you're not traveling in winter): https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Flåmsbana The rail trip from Myrdal to Geilo is nearly all above 800 m, passing through Finse, the highest station of the Bergensbanen. The scenery is nearly all above the tree line, with rocky landscapes, mountain lakes, and distant glaciers; very different from the typical landscapes down within the fjords: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Bergensbanen
