What are the sides, front and back of ship called?

Front is the bow or fore, depending on who you talk to, back is the aft or stern. Port is the left (they both have four letters) as you face the bow of the ship and starboard is the right. Your room is a stateroom or cabin, floors are referred to as decks. There are more and I'm sure someone around here will have a link or be willing to post the terminology.

port, starboard, forward and aft.

To elaborate: Facing the front of the ship, "port" is the left side and "starboard" is the right side. Both "port" and "left" have 4 letters.

I think you can probably handle forward and aft

Sable, we were posting at the same time. You win!!!

Clue a newbie in here please---you know I had to ask about the "POOP" deck!!??!! There really is a place in Galveston which has an outdoor area on top to eat/drink. The place is called "The Poop Deck"....yep, I gotta picture of that!;)

Apparently, the "poop" deck comes from the Latin word puppis. Well that is what Wikipedia says.

How we got poop from puppis is beyond me.

How we got poop as a word for; well you know----

is also beyond me.

Because that's how you pronounce it: POOpis.
