Ironore88 Posted February 18, 2020 #1 Share Posted February 18, 2020 Just checking to see if any of you have used a credit/debit card that you have uploaded euros to prior to your trip. We are considering this option but am looking for feedback. Many thanks for your response.
Rare Hlitner Posted February 18, 2020 #2 Share Posted February 18, 2020 It sounds like you are talking about a card that is pre loaded with Euros. Several banks and places like AAA sell these things. You will generally get a lousy exchange rate and often have to pay an additional fee. The cards generally work but will usually not work for things like rental cars. And if you have any Euros left, you will usually get screwed with another lousy exchange rate when you convert it back to dollars. When asked this question a few years ago my immediate reaction was why not just carry cash? We do a lot of International Travel and simply rely on multiple credit cards, that do not have International exchange fees, and several fee free ATM/debit cards. PelicanLvr Posted February 20, 2020 #4 Share Posted February 20, 2020 Since you posted on the Italy Board, I am presuming that is where you are headed. Never had a problem using American credit cards at most places in Italy. You also get an institutional (good) exchange rate from the card companies...so always charge in local currency to get that rate (even if merchant asks if you want to charge in Dollars..don't do that) and just make sure your card has no foreign transaction fees. If you use AMEX make sure you have a MC or Visa also, as AMEX is less accepted in Italy compared to USA. Finally, always have enough euros in your pocket to cover a meal in case you decide to eat someplace that does not take cards.
