Unable to avoid transiting in Hong Kong for our Cruise

We have the following Disney Cruise reservation:

-12-Night Eastbound Transatlantic Cruise from Miami ending in Barcelona   Embark Date: 11-May-2020   Debark Date: 23-May-2020)

On May 4 2020 (one week prior to the May 11 cruise departure date), we will be flying to New York from Melbourne Australia. Our flight has a 4 hours layover transit in Hong Kong. Disney's Coronavirus policy is -- guests who transit through Hong Kong airport within 14 days of the start of their cruise will not be permitted to board the ship. We are flying with Cathay Pacific, all Cathay Pacific flights will have layovers in Hong Kong, thus we are unable to avoid the Hong Kong layovers.

If we cancel our cruise now, we would lose our deposit (about $2000). Just wondering if there is a way to avoid losing our deposit. We contacted Disney Cruise Line and the Disney agent we spoke to didn't have any solutions.

Just checking if anyone here have any advice or suggestions. Thanks so much.

Contact Cathay Pacific and tell them it will be a "trip in vain" if you have to transit HKG, and ask that the ticket be endorsed over to another carrier like Qantas (a Oneworld partner.)

Cathay Pacific has issued "special ticketing guidelines" that so far only extend to flights scheduled up to the end of March.  However, it's expected that these guidelines will be extended beyond 1 April shortly, as other carriers have also recently updated their official policies regarding origin/destination/transit rules for the region.

With immediate effect, rebooking and rerouting charges will be waived for all tickets issued worldwide (irrespective of fare type) on/before 4 February 2020 (original ticket issue date) for Cathay Pacific/ Cathay Dragon confirmed booking arriving to, departing from or transit through Hong Kong on 4 February 2020 – 31 March 2020.

So don't give up, just be patient for a little while.

Are the outbound/return air booked separately?

As for the outbound, I'm seeing lots of Virgin Australia/Delta options via LAX for really really cheap for May US$500 one way.

Cathay should allow an outright cancel if they can't reroute you via LAX or DFW (on Qantas).

Cathay Pacific has now extended the no-fee change date to the end of May.
