So I'm a snob...

Recommended Posts

Well the post about "what cruise line would you not even put your mother-in-law on" has the board members of Carnival steaming. Several of us tried explaining the difference...it had no effect. Some tried to reason with them...no effect. And hence the title of this post "So I'm a snob..."

Yes, call me a snob. I prefer not to have your beer can sitting next to my glass of wine. I'd much rather listen to a lecture than watch a hairy chest contest. I'd prefer to eat pate and enjoy it in peace then to sit there and listen to you say "I ain't eatin' nothin' that looks like that"...

You see, I am me. I work hard for a living and I have the right to pick and choose where I vacation and with whom I vacation. Oh for those on the Carnival board that means I ain't gotta cruise with you if I don't like your face!

Yes, yes, I know you went to college...you forgot to mention it was BEAUTY COLLEGE. And you went to Law School...oh you left out the part that it wasn't an accredited law school.

Oh sure there are exceptions to the rule. Even I, one of the snobs, do cruise on Carnival. I have no shame in admitting it. I enjoy dumbing down on vacation!

It seems them folks on Carnival thinks we is all uptight and snobs, us folks that take Celebrity and Princess and other cruise lines. Guess they don't likes the facts that we reads and writes better then them!

And before y'all get your panties in a bunch, you should know I'm just goshing with ya!

IN OTHER WORDS ENOUGH! CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG! icon_rolleyes.gif

I was reading that thread, and just couldn't bring myself to post. I've enjoyed all my cruises for one reason or another, even the Greek cruise ship where they burned the Baked Alaska because they were having such a good time running around the dining room. But my point: It's interesting that I've read a lot of posts on the Celebrity boards about how snobby and elitist Crystal is, and I loved my cruises on their ships. Funny how stratified we can all become.

BlazerBoy...which thread did you read? Was it the one started by "Pirate something"? Saying they visited this board?

I was reading that one too.....kept my thoughts to myself.

Blazerboy - that's the point I was trying to make on Carnival board. I've been on a lot of cruise lines - Crystal to Carnival - it doesn't matter what others think, as long as you enjoy yourself and your loved ones enjoy it...Who cares what anyone else thinks! It's your vacation - enjoy it!

Thank You - Blazer! But I think its safe to say "we" are less tribal than the Afghans... until we arm the ships and engage at sea.

A law colleague ex-Navy who was on and off shore when Saigon fell commented to my interest, "If you woke one day and the shops and grocers were closed, the banks were closed, the utilities were off... in any country you'd quickly see the thin vaneer of civilization stripped away."

Must have been an interesting cruise...

Hi Lois, Hi duck!

I guess I'm a snob, too. Altough I've been on other lines, right now, X is fitting me best. I feel I have a real reason for not doing Carnival as I was on a TERRIBLE cruise that turned me against cruising for several years (so you know it was bad) but the others, NCL, HAL, RCL just didn't 'fit' me as well as X. That's why I stick with her. But in the future things may change and I'm open to that.

Going on CENTURY! Third X Cruise In Four Months!

I guess I'm a snob too. I've only been on one Carnival cruise and would never even consider doing it again. It was the worst cruise or vacation I've ever had.

The food in the dining room was so bad we only ate there 1 1/2 nights and had pizza and hot dogs the rest of the cruise.

Many of the passengers were just as distasteful as the food. Two examples:

A couple at our table in the dining room with a lovely older gentleman and his younger male paid escort. The younger man made obvious advances toward my sister who was traveling single including touching her inappropriately under the table. We immediately left the dining room. The older gentleman was obviously embarrassed and suprised since he believed the companion to be gay. He appologized profusely for his companion's behavior.

The people in the cabin next to us would put large quantities of empty beer cans outside their cabin door every night after a late night of partying and making lots of noise amd evem vomitting over the balcony.

The staff was not friendly, seemed overworked and just unhappy. None smiled or said hello as you passed them in the hallway. The waiters were obviously overwhelmed and service was awful.

Then there's the complete lack of respect for dress code.

I guess I really am a snob. This was the only cruise of 8 that I did not enjoy and I seriously considered not cruising again immediately following it. Happily, I found Celebrity and am totally hooked again. icon_smile.gif

Wow, they were right over at the Carnival board, SOME of you are snobs, or simply have had a bad experience on Carnival.

For the record, I am a white collar executive, my wife, a stay at home mom (with a college degree). We live in an upscale town, drive somewhat pricey cars/suvs and try to vacation away from home at least once a year.

We are considering Celebrity for our next cruise (with our 2 small children, 6 and 8). I'm not sure about the childrens' programs on Celebrity. Carnival has one of the best children's programs afloat, second only to Disney. Numerous cruise professionals have documented such.

Carnival has an enormous fleet. The newer ships are beautiful and much more expensive to cruise. For that reason, the passenger mix is based on the actual ship chosen.

I suspect those of you who have cruised Carnival may very well have cruised on an older ship or during a school vacation/break. If so, the passengers you described are pretty accurate.

Our school vacations are unusual, therefore we cruise "off peak". There are fewer children, teens and college students. We find the passenger mix to be pleasant, fun and a bit more upscale than you describe.

Why do we cruise Carnival? It's simple: larger ships, spectacular entertainment, good food, large cabins, Camp Carnival for the kids and the choice to have fun or to just kick back and relax.

By the way, the Celebrity cruises I have priced are coming in hundreds LESS than Carnival. That means Celebrity may get some new customers that simply can't afford to cruise on the other lines. Norwegian used to be the least expensive cruise line. Not so anymore. Celebrity's aggressive pricing may make it the next "budget" cruise line.

Will we cruise Celebrity?? Most likely, yes. I hope, however, that the fellow passengers I meet are open minded, non-judgemental, happy people who love the whole cruise experience.

Born2crooz,

My experience was on the Triumph in it's first year of service. It was off season so very few children were on board.

It was a Canada/New England itinerary so I expected something different than I've heard of the Carnival caribbean itineraries. That wasn't the case. I can overlook a few rowdy passengers and rude people and not think anything of it. However, this was so widespread I was actually shocked. Also, the complete lack of service was astounding.

Maybe my experience was just a fluke but I don't want to spend our hard earned dollars to find out. I really love Celebrity and I enjoy Royal Caribbean. I'll probably try Princess and a few others but Carnival won't be on my list of choices.

I will have to agree with you in that respect. We did the Victory to Canada a few years back. The experience was VERY different. Because it cruised out of New York, the passenger mix was very different that what we were used to. We enjoyed the cruise but will not do the Canada route again with Carnival.

I'm not going to say that ALL of our Carnival cruises were top notch. For example, we cruised the Ecstasy for our honeymoon. The ship was basically new. We loved it. We cruised again on the Ecstasy a few years later. VERY different experience. The ship was worn and because it was a shorter cruise (3 nights), the passengers were on the younger and wilder side. Would not do that ship or intinerary again.

2 years ago, we did the Paradise (non-smoking ship). The passengers were mainly couples and families. Smokers tend to be drinkers who tend to be gamblers. The cruise was very quiet and had a more "upscale" feel to it. We loved it!! Now, before I get blasted, I AM a smoker. I'm not slamming smokers, but I'm just saying that younger parents and couples along with older couples just don't have the percentage of smokers that they used to. The casinos were bare. Just go into any Las Vegas casino and you'll know what I mean.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that not ALL the Carnival ships are up to par. Some are better than others. The newer the ship, the better the service and the nicer the decor.

I just think that most Carnival cruisers are upset the we are being referred to as "trailer trash, blue collar, etc".

Whoever uses that terminology is an IDIOT, plain and simple. I just hope that these individuals are not on the ship when I decide to try Celebrity.

Don't take this the wrong way, everyone, but the truly "upper crust" don't cruise Celebrity. They cruise Seabourn, Crystal, Cunard, etc.

Celebrity, Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean are all in the same class.

I think there is a cruiseline for each person who enjoys cruising - a cruiseline that meets each persons needs and desires for a perfect vacation. For me - it is Celebrity. For someone else, it may be Carnival. Does that mean that I am right or that they are right? Yes to both - but only in respect to each individual's tastes.

Celebrity is a perfect match for us and therefore we only cruise Celebrity.

If we took a family cruise with our grandchildren (6 grandkids ranging in age from 10 to 1), Disney might be the perfect choice. Would I be wrong in sailing Disney? No, at that time Disney would be the perfect choice.

To each his own!

Well I hate to say this, but I have to! I love Celebrity, but, I want to try something different, close to home, no need to fly, the wifester hates to fly!

Last month I sailed on the Carnival Miracle, and I really enjoyed it, I wouldn't say I'm giving up Celebrity, but it was definetly fun, I meet some cruise critic people, and some dinner mates and we all hit it off together, it was a wonderful cruise, one of my best!

I am not a snob, I loved all my Celebrity cruises, but, I don't think we should put down an entire cruise line, just on inuendo!

One more thing, I saw no drunks, no roudy people, no people pucking in the hallways, no problems at all, in fact, it was almost as laid back as Celebrity, even the average age of the pax was older than me, and I'm old!

Just in case anyone actually reads this, I'm serious, Celebrity better watch their a$$, the Cathy Lee party ships are gone, I think they have some real competition now!

Is it being a snob to want better? Then Snob I am. You can't say I didn't try. We've cruised on Carnival twice. Princess, Norwegian and RCCL as well. We just like Celebrity better. It fits us. Those who love Carnival, great. But don't call us snobs if we don't. icon_razz.gif
