1smudslide Posted April 25, 2021 #1 Share Posted April 25, 2021 I've started my taxes 3 times and since I've won small jackpots in 3 different states, I need to do 4 state returns. Which software is best. I keep starting over. Turbo tax was $50 per state plus it was extra to add the correct form for adding in the winnings. It was almost $400 and it still didn't seem right. CalLuvsCrusingToo Posted April 26, 2021 #2 Share Posted April 26, 2021 I use a CPA and only file in MY state. If you Didn't receive W2G's (handpay for $1,200+ jackpot) for your winnings, Why would you need to file in each state? I give all my W2G's to the taxman, and figure out my Wins to Losses by getting win/loss statements from all the casinos or Cruise line, where I have received a w2g. If your winnings are small? Personally, I wouldn't bother. If they are substantial? I wouldn't use Turbo..... I would make appt. with taxman/cpa. You can get alot more help paying $400 to a professional to help you. YMMV

When you get a handpay in Louisiana they withhold an additional amount for their state. We just filed our home state plus Louisiana in order to get most of what they withheld back.
