tuolumne couple Posted May 15, 2021 #1 Share Posted May 15, 2021 (edited) Any birders or snorkelers out there interested in a discussion about the fish and other wildlife one might see in Tahiti? This is just such a special area, and I am wondering if there are any like-minded birders to connect with, or share notes with. Any links would be helpful. Here are the few I have found, and if you have some to share back, would love it. Would also love to see a white tailed tropicbird for the first time... https://avibase.bsc-eoc.org/checklist.jsp?region=PFwimo https://moorea-ocean-adventures.com/species/ http://www.justournature.com/2013/11/moorea-french-polynesia-part-i-nov-4-18.html Edited May 15, 2021 by tuolumne couple . karmies Posted May 17, 2021 #2 Share Posted May 17, 2021 We are headed to the Leeward Islands in October. There is not much information about the birds of the region in print. Here is a link for a decent field guide and another for a good list of birds that frequent the islands. I also bought a laminated card of 77 fish species found in the islands; if you are headed to Raiatea consider an excursion to the Taha'a Coral Gardens for snorkeling. Local birds: https://www.manu.pf/les-especes/ Field guide for birds: https://press.princeton.edu/books/paperback/9780691023991/a-field-guide-to-the-birds-of-hawaii-and-the-tropical-pacific Taha'a Coral Gardens: https://www.snorkeling-report.com/spot/snorkeling-coral-garden-tahaa/ Fish guide for snorkeling: https://www.readinglength.com/book/isbn-1601903944 Have a great trip.
Rare Vict0riann Posted May 17, 2021 #3 Share Posted May 17, 2021 I was fascinated by the birds we saw on our cruise and I didn't know what these were, but I guess they were those white-tailed tropicbirds. We saw them on a tour in Tahiti. (Not very clear, but they were high above us.)

The roll calls give specific info to the particular cruise. You should also go the "Ports" section for info on a particular geographical area. Enjoy! Have you tried going to "Ports"; and on the roll call, posting an inquiry as to other bird lovers? And doesn't "bird watching" come under the general subject of "excursions?" I don't understand why this would not be your "gig." In any event, it would not be a usual subject for this forum.

We had taken a ship's tour, which included an ancient sacred site, and that is where we saw them, flying between the trees up a hillside - just in case you are looking for a tour!
