An unexpired green card is sufficient, just as easy with it as it is for a US passport.

To re-enter the US, this is true, but many countries require the passport of the nation the person is a citizen of, in addition to a US green card.

Just a plug to get him to apply for naturalization.  My husband was a legal resident/green card holder for 10 years, and just received his citizenship.  It will make things more straight forward when you travel.  He can also then apply for an American passport and you won't need to worry about any travel restrictions (well, except for Cuba...stupid embargo!).

yes! He actually applied sent everything in for his citizenship a few weeks ago.

yes, but he does not have a passport at all, which from what I am reading...it sounds like a non citizen is required to have a passport to cruise.

This is going to depend very much on each port. It is possible that some ports on a closed loop itinerary allow a lawful permanent resident to enter with the green card, but unfortunately it must be unexpired. Is it possible to book the cruise, say, a year and a half from now and then use it to celebrate his new US citizenship, which will most surely be granted by then? (As an aside a naturalized citizen may use his or her naturalization certificate to prove citizenship for a closed loop cruise but it costs over $500 to replace if something happens to it. When I found that out we stopped using DW's nat cert and opted for a more secure means for proving identity/citizenship. We chose the Enhanced Drivers License since our state does issue them (only 5 do) and we live only 8 miles from the border, but had that not been an option we would have gone with passports.)
