Marseille

Your ship will probably offer a" for fee" shuttle bus.

In the good old  days, there used to be public buses on the main road outside the port and for a time, also a free port shuttle bus, but lines and wait times for this could be very long. You could also take a public  bus or taxi to Joliette, the closest tram station and take a tram from there.

With France only opening up to cruise ships this summer and with so many changes everywhere  in the last couple of years, I would contact either the official Marseille Tourist Office or the actual Port Authorities for up to date info closer to your arrival date.

From Villefranche, you can catch the frequent train into Nice (or to Monaco in the opposite direction), or when we visited (pre-Covid), there was the Hop-on/Hop-off bus tour that called there.

Ditto on the Nice question.  As to Marseille, while it is possible to walk to town from the port, it would be a very long walk.  There will be shuttle bus service from the port to town where you will be dropped at the Old port area adjacent to the water and city.  From there it is possible to walk to the bus/train station or simply enjoy the waterfront part of Marseille.  Many cruisers will simply take a taxi from the port into tow or to the station.  A popular option is to go to Aix en Provence for the day…which can be done by train, bus or tour.  Also consider Marseille as a gateway port to access many other places within Provence.
